Talk about dancing around the issue. The reason Indian stores are highly vulnerable is because they aren't African-American stores. There is a huge amount of black prejudice against Asians -- Indians, Koreans, Chinese, whatever -- who run stores in "black" areas. Some -- not all, but a good number -- of blacks in these areas target the stores because they are prejudiced against Asians.
This reminds me of a talk I had with an Indian programmer back in the ‘90s. He spoke with a veddy Brit accent, so I asked him where he came from. Said he was from Uganda, where his dad ran a store. Idi Amin ran all the Indians out of the country allowing them to take out, basically, the clothes on their back. The guy’s family fled to London.
Amin then gave the stores to his cronies, who lived off the proceeds until the stock ran down to zero, then shut down.
He said that a year or so later, Amin was offering to let the Indians back in if they would reopen their stores. Tongue in cheek (which was lost on him), I asked the guy if they considered it. He gave me a “Are you STUPID?” look and said they came to the U.S. instead. “So many opportunities.”
