DES MOINES, Iowa Police and protesters have clashed for more than a week in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Missouri. Local filmmaker Justin Norman captured dozens of images and video of the conflict to document the tense situation.
Norman said it didnt take long to witness a physical dispute on a street corner.
Before a half-hour of being there, I saw this woman forced to the ground, handcuffed and put in the back of a police car, arrested for standing and holding a sign, Norman said.
The distance between Des Moines and Ferguson is about 340 miles, but Norman said he felt a world away from home.
The police are all outfitted like theyre about to invade Afghanistan, Norman said.
Michael Brown, 18, was fatally shot and sparked an intense debate. Police said the unarmed teen charged Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson in an attempt to grab the officers gun. Others believe Brown had his hands up and offered to surrender.
Enough is enough, said Calvetta Berry, founder of Mothers Against Violence. There was no reason for that young man to get killed.
Berry is organizing a trip to the Missouri suburb for Saturday morning. She said she hopes their group of about a dozen will help aid protesters who have been hit with smoke bombs and tear gas.
We just want to be there and with our bodies and show support for the people of Ferguson, Berry said.
Mothers Against Violence has a few more spots open for those interested in taking the trip to Ferguson. They plan to drive down and protest all day and night Saturday, and return to Des Moines on Sunday.
Hopefully the bus suffers engine failure.
Ferguson is turning into the new-agers Woodstock.
Years from now, many will brag about being at Ferguson.
LOL!
Hipster vacation spot?
Of course she's an idiot...
As is our leadership!
However we do need to lose this whole police military mentality, using all this war hardware BS. If it gets bad and the locals can't get a handle on it by day 2 or 3 get the GD NG out there. This is not complex. Are the NG not trained for major civil disturbances?
??
Are they are trained for crowd control, have the vehicles and tear gas?
They can use their bodies to form a safe corridor down the middle of the street for the next strong-arm store robber.
You don’t see the irony in complaining about the militarization of the police and then calling for... military intervention??? I have no idea if the Guard is trained in crowd control, but I do know they don’t have to observe the niceties the cops do, such as reading people their rights.
As for the idiot who saw a woman holding a sign being arrested, do people not get that there were tactics being used by the mob to make the cops look bad? They put the peaceful-looking ones with hands in the air up on the front lines while the mob behind them did a lot of the brick throwing, etc. So, the pictures and videos were all of the mean, old cops pushing back the innocent, peaceful protesters in front.
Finally, Americans ought to count their blessings that we have a system of local police and sheriffs’ departments. They are what protects us from a national police force that answers to the feds. Remember when the sheriffs in CO told the politicians they would not enforce the un-Constitutional gun laws? That is why we have local police and sheriffs, and people should pay a lot more attention to their local elections than they do.
I’m bored with your comment..
BTW, if ya stop gawking at it, ya won’t get so bored shug.
Uh, just what are they planning to do with their bodies?
Ya can't be this stupid....But I'm sure you're are a nice person.
Would you rather call the cops and get cops or some police para-military organization? Does your National Guard not get paid paid to train and put down major disturbances? I can assure you the National Guard trained for crowd control, have tear gas and have major heavy vehicles.
Where ya been TX?
What do ya think National Guard means ?
Not sure I should respond to someone who starts by calling me stupid, but maybe I am a glutton for punishment. Please tell me when someone has called the cops and had a paramilitary group show up? Ferguson was a riot situation, not a normal police call. Perhaps you would like to walk out into the middle of a mob throwing bricks and molotov cocktails and shooting from rooftops without any extra protection.
That is cool. Just hope they aren’t targeted for daring to express support for law enforcement.
Lets cut to the chase Tx and stop the BS... Are the National Guard not trained in crowd control, riot control, tactics, have tear gas and have military vehicles etc....?
Yes no? Get real.
Ya want cops to do cop jobs play National Guard military?
What are you selling here?
Mine will be on here in PA. tomorrow. ...I know that two or three people tried to join the protesters and were ushered away by police after they were slandered and shouted at by the protesters. Which really wasn't a good idea to go there IMO.....Better to have their own ptotest at another end of town...which they did.
You don’t call out the National Guard for every mob situation.
