This article is the first in a series that highlights key issues in Africa in relation to the first-ever U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit taking place in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 4-6.

Initially when I read the headline quickly, I thought it said that the belief in the work ethic was strong in America and I almost burst out laughing. But then I saw it was Africa and that makes more sense. I don’t know many Africans personally, but the ones I do know (from Nigeria) have a very strong work ethic. If we had immigrants like that coming to the country to work to get ahead, we’d be in good shape.
My daughter and her husband just returned from Uganda. It is amazing how self-sufficient the people there are.
The Africans I’ve encountered here in Europe - Nigerians, Kenyans, Ugandans, a Senegalese chap and a fine fellow from Cameroon - all have incredibly strong work ethics that put mine to shame.
And I have a pretty darned strong work ethic!
Over there if you don’t work, you don’t eat.
