Texas Governor Rick Perry announced Monday afternoon that he is sending 1,000 members of the Texas National Guard to the U.S.-Mexican border. Over the years I have repeatedly called on the federal government to live up to its responsibility of protecting this great nation by securing the border, said Perry, who added that he will not stand idly by while our citizens are under assault and little children from Central America are detained in squalor.
Under assault might be an understatement. According to Perry, more than 203,000 illegal aliens responsible for committing more than 640,000 crimes, including 3000 homicides, have been booked into Texas county jails since 2008. He further pointed out that the thousands of unaccompanied minors apprehended crossing the border comprise less than 20 percent of total influx and while enforcement agents are giving humanitarian aid to these children, drug cartels, human traffickers and individual criminals are exploiting this tragedy for their own criminal opportunities.

What exactly are the rules of engagement for this operation?
Unless he is willing to use Military power, then calling out the military is nothing but a photo op.
Hopefully this will be more than symbolic BS to help his political career. I have my doubts though.
Texas Hold`em
I’m not blaming Perry for it but the guard will effectively be WalMart greeters because all agree that the law dictates that anyone apprehended will be turned over to immigration officials. (Which is what the illegals want anyway)
On the other hand it does help drag attention back to the border situation and may help drive the drug smugglers to seek other routes. (Sorry Arizona and NM)
Its also important to not that this comes at the beginning of the slow season.
All Perry’s action does is prove what we’ve suspected all along: that he’s a borderline conservative who is firmly rooted in being a RINO. His order to send in the National Guard is nothing more than a soundbite/photo op/attempt to add to his conservative credentials... while in actuality doing nothing substantial whatsoever. The border between Texas and Mexico is at least 1000 miles long, so do the math on sending in 1000 troops.
More diaper changers are on the way,
to save the day.

Has Perry revealed what the scope and duties of the NG will be?
Or is this more like the facade GWBush created when he put 6,000 NG on the border — in shifts of a few hundred for a few weeks at a time, adding up to the 6,000 over several months?
The last NGs on the border were tasked with filling out forms, filing, washing BP vehicles, etc. They were not even allowed to carry weapons. If fired upon by Those-across-the-border, they were supposed to hunker down.

At least, Perry is finally doing something. I just hope it is more than political posturing for 2016.
If you stop them from crossing the border, you don’t have to send them back....
Simple as that....
Let’s not agree with the pretense of Gov. Perry really doing anything.
The National Guard of Texas is under orders to NOT APPREHEND illegal aliens.
This is another empty, meaningless, PR Stunt by Rick “Open Borders” Perry.
The National Guard could be apprehending ALL Illegal Aliens, but Rick Perry has them under orders to NOT APPEHEND.
So how will they stop them from crossing?
They will cross And surrender. Texas will give them to ice
Ice will disperse them around the country
Same as now
If Texas won’t let them in from Mexico, Obama will bus them to Texas from New Mexico and Arizona. I miss the rule of law.
Build a wal...Do as other countries have done over the years...Put agents along the wall...tell them to go back...if they don’t, shoot ‘em...
THAT ^^ is the important question. I've been wondering that, myself. If anyone finds out....please ping.
Thanks, TomGuy....looks like you’ve answered our question, with your post #15.
Sounds like they will be a part of the Diaper-Changer Brigade.
Darn :-(
Exactly
That will last about 1 day
This is SOP. Back in the day when the NG helped with drug interdiction programs they were not empowered to arrest, only to spot and report. They were armed to protect themselves, but they can be called by an LEO for backup and then take part in arrests. If they embed an LEO with them (like we did) then they can detain and arrest.
