Having grown up in Milwaukeestan, I thank my Dad on a regular basis for getting us OUT of there. And that was back in 1970; a short 44 years ago!
ALL of our family has gotten out - I cannot imagine living in our old ‘hood these days. Used to be all hard-working Germans, Jews and Norskis. Cops. Firemen. Tradesmen. Brewers. Bankers. Bakers.
Now? 100% ghetto. And coming to a Socialist Mecca near you!
Ah, but they have the famous “Black Holocaust” Museum which I’m sure from the many highway signs is a sure tourist draw.
My family lived one block away from 14th and Olive, as mentioned in the story, during WWII. Nobody locked their house or worried about crime. The scariest thing was the polio epidemics. Went back about 10 years ago to look at the old “hood” -—— I left in a hurry!
