wars are won by massing overwhelming offensive power at the decisive place and time, at the enemies center of gravity. Anything else just prolongs the war and protracted non-decisive warfare is worse than quick decisive warfare.

So yes, it was proportional.
You start a fight, it leaves you wide open for what ever comes you way. That rule insures that everyone stays civil.

A “proportional response” would be for Israel to blindly fire rockets into Palestinian population centers and kill as many civilians as possible.
So, this is not a “proportional response”, it is MUCH LESS than that.
