'Life ended there' Rare interviews with the children of America’s border disaster.

I mmet Mirabel in 2011, four years after she had left her home in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, a city reputed to be the murder capital of the world. She, her sisters and mother were terrorized by an alcoholic father who abused them and stole the earnings from her mother’s struggling grocery store to spend on liquor and women. The tipping point came when Mirabel, then 16, confronted her father after a drunken rampage, and he nearly killed her with a machete. When an uncle offered to pay for a smuggler to take Mirabel to the United States, her mother begged her not to go. “We all know the stories of women who get raped or die in the desert,” Mirabel told me. “But I couldn’t stay. I had no life there.” She told her mother she loved her, boarded a bus with her teenage cousin and headed north, hoping for a better education and a better life in “El Norte.” But Mirabel’s safe passage across the U.S. border 15 days later was just the beginning of another ordeal that came with its own terrors. Immediately after entering the United States, she was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley. “They were questioning me, and I was crying,” she recalled to me. “I said, ‘I can’t go back.’ I was 16, the only under-aged girl and little, but those officers put handcuffs on me just like I was a criminal.” After spending a few days in jail, she was taken into federal custody at a shelter in Los Fresnos, Texas, for unaccompanied minors. It was clean, Mirabel says, and had a nice enough living room, but she soon realized she couldn’t leave. “There was no life—life ended there,” she says. “

“America’s border disaster”? Somebody has been hittin’ da happy smoke again! Why isn’t it Mexico’s” border disaster. I’ll tell you why. They have laws in Mexico and they aren’t afraid to enforce them. Thanks to the Kenyan, America has become just another lawless banana republic run by a two bit dictator and his commie cohorts.

If having a bad daddy is the standard, I’m guessing we can expect boatloads of muslims.

That they are 16-17 years old gives me no amount of angst.

At 16 you can become an emancipated minor, go to college, hold a full time job and live on your own.

All of which I did.

You can also be charged, as an adult, for many crimes, which I never committed.

Go find me some 8 year olde who made it here on their own.

I was a 16/17 year old boy myself once and I was plenty of trouble with good parents.

Unless I’m mistaken, these Central American source nations are predominantly Catholic … And although some of these countries might not be on the best terms with the Vatican, is not a primary charge of the Church to care for the poor?

Instead of American Bishops exhorting their flock to take care of these kids after they get here in the name of “charity”, perhaps Pope Francis should exert some leverage of the hierarchy in these countries (or their leaders as a Head of State) to bring the focal point of charity where it belongs.

how true!
I know a young lady (non Hispanic) who had the misfortune of getting involved with an undocumented Guatamalan man who has had 8 kids with 4 different women.
He actually had 2 of them preggo at the same time.
and he looks like a frog. I don’t get the appeal.
and no, he does not support any of his kids.

No they found a female who claimed to be only 16 and who had a domestic problem that could have been taken care of in Mexico...

the father could have been arrested..

Whats to stop the “father” from coming to the US himself as an illegal alien and killing her anyway ???

meanwhile shes not a refugee fleeing from violent gangs..

Clearly, she belongs in Chicago, where she'd fit right in.

A lot of kids in the USA live horrendous lives. We really do NOT need to import more troubled teens.

If American families and neighborhoods and schools were in excellent shape, well-funded, loving, effective, perhaps we could afford to bring in other children.

But as it is, no adoption service would OK us to bring up adopted kids. We have so very much work to do to get America back on track.

These people are all so poor, and they have nothing, but they have tens of thousands of dollars, or pesos, or whatever to pay to sneak their kids into the US.

Good comment. I couldn't afford to send my kids to Central America. If I had any.

4 grand? I’ve read stories of people having as much as $20,000 and I think to my self “Where and how do ‘’poor’’ people in these crap hole countries get that kind of coin? If if they do get why not open a little bodega or a taxi stand where they live?

Well, if you ever do have any don’t send them to Central America.

I basically made my daughter swear to me she would not go to Mexico. She did recently go (but she is all grown up now) for a bachelorette party (these girls are living high off the hog these days!), but she made the bride swear to her that they would not leave the resort at all. Which she did not, although I think some of them might have.

I used to say: look bad things can happen anywhere, but I just want you to be in a place where if something bad happens the cops will give a damn about it.

Good question. In some cases the money is being sent to them by relatives already working illegally in the US. Other than that, it is quite a mystery how so many thousands could come up with the amounts they apparently pay to the coyotes.
