ISIS emerged around the same time Iraq experienced its warmest March-April-May season on record. It may just be an interesting coincidence, but it could mean more.
This winter was not a good one for farmers in the Fertile Crescent.
A punishing drought hit most of Syria and northern Iraq during whats normally the wettest time of the year. In the mountains of eastern Turkey, which form the headwaters of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, snow and rain were less than half of normal. The region has seen one of the worst droughts in decades.
Drought is becoming a fixture in the parched landscape, due to a drying trend of the Mediterranean and Middle East region fueled by global warming. The last major drought in this region (2006-2010) finished only a few years ago. When taken in combination with other complex drivers, increasing temperatures and drying of agricultural land is widely seen as assisting in the destabilization of Syria under the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Before civil war broke out there, farmers abandoned their desiccated fields and flooded the cities with protests. A series of U.N. reports released earlier this year found that global warming is already destabilizing nation states around the world, and Syria has been no exception.
With the ongoing crisis in Iraq seemingly devolving by the day, its not a stretch to think something similar could already be underway just next door.
One of the most devastating droughts in decades hit Syria and Iraq in 2007-2008. Scientists have linked the drought to climate change.
Could there be a connection between climate change and the emerging conflict in Iraq?
The short answer is a qualified yes, according to Frank Femia of the Center for Climate and Security....

Just when I thought an AGW argument could not be made more silly and moronic.
No, just 12 centuries of inbreeding.

But no such luck, since there is no global warming.
“Meteorologists”. Aren’t those the guys that can’t even get tomorrow’s weather right? Oh well, they have only a 10% chance of getting it right.
Oh my! These people are really cranking up the AGW lobby. What are they leading up to?
Lots of unsupported suppositions in this article. Iraq has always lacked good water supplies. It’s a fucking desert country and has been for thousands of years, long before “manmade global warming” was even a wet dream.
US Army Engineers, mainly geologists and well-drilling experts, helped drill many wells for poor Iraqi villages and farmers between 2003 and 2004, if not longer. One story almost never reported by our slipshod media (There was one good story on this effort but I don’t recall where it was from).
Iraq has the Red Sea right up its wazoo so it if wanted to spend some of that oil money on desalinization plants and new pipelines to bring it upcountry, it could have.
Perhaps this was one US mistake, i.e. not insisting that the Iraqi Govt provide its people with clean water.
ISIS did not just spring up out of nothing. It has been festering and planning for a long time before it struck in Syria and then Iraq. That is how terrorist groups/insurgencies work. They don’t consult the climatologists for when would be a good time to launch an insurrection/invasion, other than not doing it during the wet season if they are coming out of the mountains.
Wet season offensives are for Africa, SE Asia, India, Pakistan and maybe Afghanistan, but not desert states.
Meteorologists should read some history books once in a while. They might learn something.
Spot on...
Warmer temperatures spawn radical Islam. I believe that’s proven in one of the AGW models.
I did not read the article - but took the headline to it’s logical conclusion.
“Is “Gore-Bull Warming”....
No, Obama is and has been! This war was won; we just had to wrap it up. El-Presidente surrendered our victory.
Now THAT is INDUSTRIAL STRENGTH STUPID. Stupidest WWW post of the day winner!

Yes of course, it’s all caused by climate change... to say that these people are nuts is insufficient.
Islam would no doubt be a peaceful religion if it was not for Global Warming.
They are trying to create another fake economic growth bubble. They can only pump up the stock market for so long before even the rubes catch on.
