I need some local help to get from IAH to Webster,TX. Then, later from South Post Oak Rd to IAH. Mapquest sends me way around the loop.

Step #1: Log on to amazon.com
Step #2: Order a Garmin GPS for 77 bucks
Step #3: Plug it in
Step #4: Start driving and follow the directions.

Rereading I see, I gave you directions from the airport to Webster and forgot about from Post Oak. I would say that was not a good choice for going to Webster. I would try looking for a hotel in League City or Friendswood, or maybe even Kemah or Seabrook.

Two ways out of the terminal, JFK Blvd and Will Clayton Pkwy. Take WCP east to US 59, go south. When you get near downtown, get to the right side of the freeway, take the IH 45 south exit. Depending on your Webster exit, you might want to take Eldorado Blvd, Bay Area Blvd, NASA Parkway, (formely NASA Rd 1). From Post Oak back to IAH, depending where you are on Post Oak, get on US 59 north. Stay on 59 past downdown and beyond. Take the Will Clayton Parkway exit and go west to IAH. Easy. http://mapq.st/1ncm7k6

LOL if there is a smartphone on board, save the 77 bucks and get a free map app.

Purchase a paper map for 2.99 at a 76 station.

Yes, I have four GPSs and know how to use them. Map is better. Use your brain to memorize the route.

FWI>> I was born in Houston. Lived there most of my life. I fly there AT LEAST once a month for business, sometimes more.. so, I’m pretty familiar with the routes to/from the airport. :-)

The trick to the traffic is: Always give yourself more time than you think you need.. and, BE PATIENT. You WILL get there, it will just take time.

I was going to advise you to listen to AM740... for traffic reports. But, if you don’t know the roads, I don’t think they help you that much.

Thanks. I’ll probably just follow the toll roads.

On the other hand, I am renting a car. So swappin’ some paint is OK by me. I mean, how bad can the traffic be in downtown Houston at 5pm?

Didn’t you read the thread that said real men don’t ask for directions? Skip the GPS. If possible always avoid going through downtown. Take your chances with the directions the car rental place gives. If you get stuck you will have the best story to tell at dinner.

Fly into San Antonio and drive from there! It will be the same drive time.

Not joking.

Are you actually going to class in the Medical Center area? Staying in Webster?

IAH to Webster is nearly a straight shot on 59-South and I-45 / Gulf Freeway- South. Exit the IAH airport via Will Clayton (east) rather than JFK (south). Take 59 South to I-45 South. There are alternative routes to get to I-45, but unless there is a major accident along this route, it is probably the best way. Traffic will come to a crawl on I-45 / Gulf Freeway once you get to the South Beltway. If you have an additional passenger, you could probably bypass some of the traffic at that point by using the HOV lanes.

Webster to South Post Oak (if you mean near the Galleria Mall by the 610 West Loop) is easiest to reach by taking I-45 / Gulf Freeway north to the 610 Loop westbound and exiting around San Felipe. (The Galleria Mall is at Westheimer and Post Oak just one block west of 610.) Don’t confuse Post Oak and S Post Oak. South Post Oak is one block further west on San Felipe.

Neither of these two routes involve toll roads. If you do need to take a toll road, most of the tolls range from 50 cents to $1.75 with most trips around Beltway 8 passing a couple of these. There may be toll roads that you cannot access without an EZ Tag (Westpark, for example). If you accidentally get on one of these, you can call the toll authority and pay the toll over the phone.

avoid the Hardy toll road - it never made any sense to me

The Hardy south, I agree with you.. but, Northbound?? It's SAVED me... several times.

Also very good if you're going to the Woodlands at rush hour.

Thanks. It’s going to be a long week.

Doesn't have to be, there are some excellent seafood restaurants all around the area, Kemah boardwalk is the most popular (used to be a very salty town, now more upscale). NASA is right there, they just brought the shuttle transport in, should be worth a look. Decent night life if you're into that. The weather this weekend has been absolutely perfect, humidity low enough to give you a static shock getting out of your car, 80's, clear, unlimited visibility. Hopefully it'll hold out for your visit.

Right. I fly into IAH. My hotel is in Webster. The class is on S Post Rd. 8am-5p T-F

This was set up for me by a travel agency.

When I saw the itinerary, I started getting a little nervous.
