Before the 1898 Spanish-American War, the Philippines was a Spanish colony for several hundred years. America kept the Philippines as a commonwealth (like Puerto Rico) until 4 July 1946, when the Philippines was given full independence by the United States. [The Philippines would have gotten it earlier, but the country was occupied by the Japanese in WW2.]
To think that the Philippines would want to go from an independent country to a state of the United States and have Washington, DC call the shots is totally insane. Filipinos have enough problems without the meddlesome morons in Foggy Bottom running things. This proves John F'ing Kerry is on drugs

Excellent - thank you.
1934 act - aka Tydings-McDuffie (allowed for 10 year transition to statehood).

A 51st state one third as large as the whole rest of the country (96 million people at last count?
A story from the people who claimed Obama was appointing Anderson Cooper our Ambassador to the Philippines?
Go here and try not to be so gullible next time.

Not quite.
Japan had already decided, and begun preparations, to go to war with the US in the early ‘20s.
The embargoes of oil and metals, brought on by the Japanese Rape of Nanking by Japanese forces, only served to make the Japanese that much less capable once they begun the war.

If it were a red state, that would be a very big help to the electoral college while causing a massive shift on the Math in the house. Seat re-distribution would be very interesting.
