What a better world this would be if the South succession had been a achieved permanently.


This is the frustrating part of this for me. The US really needed to be kept together, but the way he did it was less than honorable.

Also, it is what gave us big government. Before Lincoln, the united states was more akin to the EU. The federal government was VERY limited. I compare it to a brick wall. the states are the bricks and the mortar holding them together is the Federal government.

Now we have a mortar wall with fifty marbles embedded in it.

I’m sure that Brussels would disagree with that equation. They consider themselves much more powerful that the antebellum US Federal Government.

Can’t say that by now the South wouldn’t have been equally corrupted away from constitutional values as has the Fed. gov.

Right. Lincoln seized a lot of power that wasn’t constitutionally granted to the president.
