Son wants a new Honda Civic. I know they're probably the best small car on the market, but they're very expensive per pound.

I suggested a Hyundai.

Son is willing to compromise with the KIA.

We're going car shopping next week. Will be looking for the basic model with manual transmission and no options.

No group of people I know is more knowledgeable about cars than Freepers.

So... what has been your experience with the Hyundai / KIA?

I'm not looking for anything except the Hyundai or KIA, so please don't advise for a Ford (I know no one would recommend a GM or a Chrysler product).

And a Bugatti Veyron is out of the question.

Thanks in advance!

Just bought a used 2011 Hyundai Sonata. Traded in my Durango. Had 40K miles. I paid 11k. Kelly blue book was 13,800. They couldn’t sell it because it was a 6 speed manual. I first saw it at 13k, when they dropped the price I wentover and bought it. So far so good. Brother has Kia Forte. My engine has more power but both are nice cars. Surprisingly large trunk space and bluetooth is excellent.

Both of your choices are junk. Why would you buy anything but Ford - the only true American car company?

I would hope you've done your "homework" via cars.com before you start hitting the dealerships.
I also suggest you go to the True Delta site and enter the makes & models to do reliability comparisons.

I’ve got a 2004 Kia Sedona EX minivan, and admittedly, my wife drives it - and is a LOT harder on vehicles than I am. It was fine the first 90,000 miles or so. Then the transmission went out, and while I had admonished her to take it in before the extended warranty ran out, she didn’t. It’s been one little thing after another after another. It was in the shop as much this summer (a/c, other engine problems) as it was out.

I’d personally look at Hyundai, Toyota (made in America), or Ford.

Hyundai or KIA?
******************
Same company , same cars , slight styling differences ... You are really asking the Korean version of Oldsmobile or Buick?

FWIW — A relative bought a standard-shift Hyundai Elantra last year. Consistently gets 36 mpg around town and on the highway, it gets 45 to 50 mpg, depending on if driving in the North Georgia hills/mountains or flatter highways around Atlanta.

The thing only costs a bit over $15k brand new. It’s not completely optioned out, but it has all the normal power options (steering, brakes, windows, locks), A/C and a decent radio (satellite capable and built in USB).

I don’t know what you are looking for, but for *BASIC* transportation that *sips* gas, they’ve been VERY happy with that Elantra.

quite literally the same company(Hyundai and Kia)
Things to consider.
Standard warrantee 3-5yrs 30-60k miles.
Hyundai, Kia and Mazda 10 years 100k. so a 3-4yo has as much left as a new car. Just first get a consumer reports internet subscription for $5/m, look at KBB.com CR and CarMax.com.

The more miles/yr the newer the car should be. The older your son the more expensive and newer the car could be. 1st car get a beater and make him learn how to do basic maintenance(Kids no longer have any idea about doing an oil chance or brake pad swap)

Since an automobile is a depreciating asset, you might look at the advantages of leasing http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/best-car-deals/Car-Lease-Deals/. These are manufacturer sponsored (also known as subvented) leases that are subsidized and carried by their finance arm.

Would not recommend any lease arrangement with a third party or bank. Try to stay within the annual mile allowances. BTW, Hyundai and Kia have shared ownership in Korea.
