Netflix recommendations needed.

Posted on 12/18/2013 7:18:35 PM PST by Mountain Mary

Looking for some new mysteries to watch on Netflix or Amazon...preferably Brit, Swede, Danish or otherwise European(better actors)..but could be American if they are decent like Breaking Bad. I posted a request a while ago and many of you great Freeper friends responded with good suggestions. It turned out to be a fun thread.,,,a necessary distraction at this stressful time of year...from all things Obama, libs, Dems, progressives and dysfunctional families?

If you are going to watch “House of Cards” try the original British version first.

“House of Cards keeps talking about government involvement and I can’t take it.”

Agreed. It’s too left wing political. And so’s Spacey. I try not to let that influence me with entertainers, but in this case the show is not good enough for me to get past it.

I’ve watched a few episodes of Revenge, and quite like it. Amazing eye candy as well! Of course there’s a bit of homosexuality - that’s inescapable these days.

Sorry - not sure if Revenge is on Netflix or not.

“Keeping up Appearances “

Looks like fun. The laugh track is annoying but it’s pretty difficult to avoid those.

‘Luther’ on Netflix from BBC America. ‘Broadchurch’ not on Netflix yet, but I really enjoyed it, hope to find it streaming somewhere.

I have just discovered Downton Abby- and it's wonderful!

Much to my delight, I found that I can get caught up on all the episodes on my Kendle free since I have a prime account with Amazon.

Not a mystery or foreign but a good ‘ol American movie I’ve seen recently that you just have to see- especially you Freeper girls!

.

Shall We Dance- 2004
Richard Gere, Susan Sarandan and Jennifer Lopez.

First, if you’ve ever had any bad blood for Gere, Lopez or Sarandon, this movie can definitely help to repair that. The entire cast (including bit parts) were all incredible actors. Every character had such a warm, funny vibe. There’s no way anyone can see this movie and not have a smile on their face afterwards. face.

This is a marvelous discussion of marriage, personal evolution, and the journey away from desperation through growth. The characters are believable, poignant, and often funny.

Shall We Dance is a delicious, romantic comedy that doesn’t require magical, unbelievable script devices, sex and violence to make it work.
What sets “Shall We Dance?” apart from the majority of films, today, is its lack of cynicism and its warm sense of humor. This is a throwback to another era of movie making where romance and integrity prevail.
This movie comes at a good time in American life when our lifestyles are such that we may be coming to that age that for everything we have, we still are empty.

It was great to see Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez dance together. Jennifer definitely displayed her years of dance training, here, and it was a great vehicle for her many talents as both actress and dancer.
I was so happy to see a film where a man doesn’t have to engage in an extramarital affair or run away from his responsibilities to open his eyes to a new way of life filled with dance and self expression.

I’m always seeking good entertainment that doesn’t resort to raw sex and violence. This one stands on its own with a good story.
And, by the way, the music is wonderful.
‘Old school’...absolutely haunting.

Sarandon character’s observations on the reason why people get married is rather interesting and stays with you:

“We need a witness to our lives. There’s a billion people on the planet... I mean, what does any one life really mean? But in a marriage, you’re promising to care about everything. The good things, the bad things, the terrible things, the mundane things... all of it, all of the time, every day. You’re saying ‘Your life will not go unnoticed because I will notice it. Your life will not go un-witnessed because I will be your witness’.”

Next showings:

EncoreHD Thursday, Dec 19 4:10 AM CST

EncoreHD Dec 24, 3:30 PM

Oh I’m a longtime D.A. fan, Patriot....obsessed like so many of us! That’s what started my hunt for MORE good drama, mostly from across the pond.
