To use gravity and an artisan well, a drop from the source of about six to eight feet over distance is useful, then the pump can gurgle happily along pumping back much higher using a reduced diameter piping. There are some nice vids on youtube of rife-ram pumps in action.

Another thing with an artesian well, you can always hook up a waterwheel for power.
