Electronic ignitions may leave us vulnerable to EMP, but they do make life maintaining cars and bikes a lot easier............
For the curious, dwell was the amount of time (in degrees) that the coil had time to charge up. Not enough on those old weak ignitions, and you got crappy spark. Setting the point gap too close to increase dwell could cause a lot of arcing of points and pitting.
Which led to filing the points, yet another arcane mechanical skill from when a "tune up" actually meant some work was involved.
If I messed any of this up, blame my 65 year old memory banks and things I have not dealt with for forty years.
