In an effort to make a political point about concealed carry in public buildings, an anti-gun Kansas Democrat has inadvertently introduced an amendment that makes open carry legal in the state capitol.
The amendment was introduced by Lawrence Kansas Democrat John Wilson who states that he is, in fact, opposed to guns in public buildings and only introduced the bill to draw attention to what he considered the hypocrisy of legislators who wanted to allow the concealed carry of weapons in other public buildings, including schools and mental health centers, but not in their own workplace.
He went on to add this his actual intent was to allow concealed carry in the Capitol, and only the Capitol and only concealed. Thats what the amendment I drafted did or so I thought.
In typical fashion for a politician, he blamed the mistake on someone else, in this case an attorney in the Revisor of Statutes office.
But Wilsons little political joke may backfire on him as his amendment actually passed the House and is moving on to the Senate.
However, there are reports that Senate Republicans are planning to remove the open carry provision and they need to hear from you now!
Tell them that removing the open carry provision will be considered a vote against gun owners!
Cave to who? It looks to me like they don't want to take the chance of facing an armed public in their workplace, and reached that decision all on their own.
The amendment may have been submitted for all the wrong reasons, but it's still a valid point. If I, as a law-abiding citizen, have the right to carry a fiream concealed or otherwise then I should have the right to take it into any public building or place that caters to the buying public. Missouri has the same restrictions - can't take your firearm into the capitol, can't take it into city hall, and I don't think that's right at all.
“introduced by Lawrence Kansas Democrat John Wilson”
For those that don’t know, Lawrence Kansas can be compared to Madison, WI...liberal enclave.
His alleged plan makes no sense. The bill he opposes would allow concealed carry in public buildings with no metal detectors. His ‘protest bill’ is supposedly to include the capitol in the list of public buildings. Well guess what - the capitol building has a metal detector and x-ray machine.
I did not know that Lawrence was the equivalent of Madison but it makes sense given this guys strange approach to the law.
