This whole shortage of gun related items is interesting and to me, surprising. I am 66 and have never seen anything like it.

I do recall a couple of times during Viet Nam when there was ammo shortages but neither time lasted very long. When the first assault weapon ban came along, there was some panic buying but again, nothing like this.

Maybe people know something I don’t but I just keep thinking the shortage will end and keep being wrong. I personally don’t need any but if I did it would really bother me.

I need some and I’m bothered by it. Mostly, because I should have bought something last year. I think people intuitively know something is going to happen in which guns and ammo will be good to have.

I'm about 10 years younger than you - I do remember during the Cuban Missile Crisis, my dad and all his buddies (ex-GIs and NG and Reserve, WWII and Korea) fanned out across Atlanta and basically bought up every round of loaded ammo, every bullet, every can of powder, and every primer in the city. They also cleaned out the reloading equipment.

Dad said it took months for the supply to get back to normal. But if the Commies had landed in Savannah, we were ready!

Last I saw was the year that Janet Reno got salesman of the year. (Yes, I said salesMAN.)

People bought up so much that when pressure dropped off, the gun shops had low sales for a while, as folks used their previously purchased supplies.

I was surprised, too, with both shortages. But there have been a whole lot of publications from all kinds of people and groups (even government) instigating hysteria and panic with surreal stories to tell their various predictions about the future--something we didn't see so much of in the past, either--not so much all at once. Leaders among our parents and grandparents leaned more toward trying to prevent panics.

It is interesting, though--even fascinating, reading about all of the craziness. By the way, most of those predictions contain some unrealistic imaginings in some way or other. I wonder how many people know that many of them might just be much poorer in very unexciting circumstances before long (as seen on usual days in Third World countries)? Firearms might be very cheap then, while other tools may be priced sky high (Asian and other imports).

Maybe I'll get out and fire an old favorite, after the weather warms up here in the northwest...maybe a 25-06. Remember the arguments between that and the 6mm Remington? Heh.
