Joe “Tailgunner Joe” McCarthy was a proven liar claiming to have been a combat veteran, making it an early case of stolen honor. Lyndon Baines Johnson later regreted accepting the award of a decoration that was not actually earned in WWII. Yet, Joe McCarthy was regarded by Robert kennedy as a good friend, and Kennedy attended McCarthy’s funeral.

It has been speculated due to these and a number of other factors that Joe McCarthy may have served as an agent provocateur specifically to create a public backlash against investigations against Communists and thereby shield against further actions being taken against Communists. If so, the ploy was highly successful to the point where no inquiries against Communism and its conspiracies to overthrow Constitutional government are allowed.

"...and thereby shield against further actions being taken against Communists."

Interesting point because all McCarthy did was parrot HUAC (Which would have been harder to ridicule and debase the truth).

Don’t make the mistake I made for much of my life, and many people like you are still making: accepting the liberal/media slander of Joseph McCarthy.

He exaggerated his war record, but he did in fact fly 12 combat missions.

It's true that McCarthy exaggerated his record, but he did, indeed, fly on combat missions.

Who has made such speculations? McCarthy's efforts to raise awareness about Soviet espionage and policy sabotage, which began in 1950, resonated with much of the electorate. The investigations by his subcommittee, which began in 1953, were also popular with the public until the fiasco of the 1954 Army hearings, after which his popularity declined.
