Harvey Manssfield is the great teacher of government and long-time member of the Harvard faculty. Among his books are Manliness and an indispensable edition of Tocquevilles Democracy in America. The Wall Street Journal Weekend interview profiles Professor Mansfield. At age 80, he can look back on an incredibly distinguished career, but hes still going strong. The quotable Professor Mansfield offers this:
We have now an American political party and a European one. Not all Americans who vote for the European party want to become Europeans. But it doesnt matter because thats what theyre voting for. Theyre voting for dependency, for lack of ambition, and for insolvency.
And this, referring to Massachusetts and Harvard:
I live in a one-party state and very much more so a one-party university. Its disgusting. I get along very well because everybody thinks the fact that Im here means the things I say about Harvard cant be true. I am a kind of peta pet dissenter.
And this, returning to the election just passed:
[T]he electorate that granted Barack Obama a second term was unwisethe president achieved a sneaky victory, Mr. Mansfield says. The Democrats said nothing about their plans for the future. All they did was attack the other side. Obamas campaign consisted entirely of saying Im on your side to the American people, to those in the middle. No matter what comes next, this silence about the future is ominous.
At one level Mr. Obamas silence reveals the exhaustion of the progressive agenda, of which his presidency is the spiritual culmination, Mr. Mansfield says. That movement depends on the idea that things will get better and better and progress will be made in the actualization of equality. It is telling, then, that during the 2012 campaign progressives were confined to defending what theyve already achieved or making small improvementsstudent loans, free condoms. The Democrats are the party of free condoms. Thats typical for them.
But Democrats refusal to address the future in positive terms, he adds, also reveals the partys intent to create an entitlement or welfare state that takes issues off the bargaining table and renders them above politics. The end goal, Mr. Mansfield worries, is to sideline the American constitutional tradition in favor of a practical constitution consisting of progressive measures the left has passed that cannot be revoked. And that is what would be fixed in our political systemnot the Constitution.
And free colons.
Dog bites man.
Free condoms. And if the condoms don’t work, free diapers.
The Democrats are the Party of...make that...the cult of Death.
I honestly don’t see how we can win against “Free Condoms...” !?
(The price of buying a vote has sure gone down since the Central Pacific Railroad set up a table in front of the ballot box to pass out gold/silver coins to purchase votes for the “San Francisco-to-subsidize-the-railroad-$$” ballot measure it promoted in the 1860’s. The RR ran out of coins and the hordes rioted demanding more. The RR people barely made it back to the vault fast enough to get the coins required to satiate the good voters of San Francisco (Nancy Pelosi’s district, I believe).
Nowadays, all it takes is free condoms (or foodstamps or just an Obamaphone). Much cheaper. See how lucky we are to live in a time and place where things are so inexpensive? Isn’t this the dream of economics, to create societies where anybody can acquire anything they want or need for so very little cost?
Said another way - Obama and his cohorts are trying to do what no other socialist outfit has been able to do, and that is to bring to fruition - The Worker's Paradise on Earth. Something they will not be able to sustain even if they do make it a reality.
Obama is their god, fashioned like a Golden Calf, destined to last only a short time.
This is their last stab and they know it.
The stuff that is given by the Democrats is not free it cost taxpayers plenty!!!
to be more accurate,
Democrats are the party of free stuff to their friends and groups they want to control, by legally robbing the people they hate and/or have been unableto co trol.
