With the 2012 Doomsday date quickly approaching, anxiety and fear are gripping more and more people across the globe. According to a recent survey of individuals in over twenty countries, 15% of people worldwide believe the end of the world as we know it will happen in our lifetime.
“Whether they think it will come to an end through the hands of God, or a natural disaster or a political event, whatever the reason, one in seven thinks the end of the world is coming,” said Keren Gottfried, research manager at Ipsos Global Public Affairs which conducted the poll for Reuters.
“Perhaps it is because of the media attention coming from one interpretation of the Mayan prophecy that states the world ‘ends’ in our calendar year 2012,” Gottfried said, adding that some Mayan scholars have disputed the interpretation.

Preppers’ PING!
I’ve talked to hundreds of preppers over the last two years and many people who like me try and provide guidance to those who prep or staring to and the one comment I hear the most is that they have a ‘feeling’. These people are from all social, education and financial backgrounds. They say that there are demonstrable statistic that show that the number of people missing airline flights that end up crashing is higher than the average number of people that miss flights. I know myself there have been times when I have putted around doing this and that in the morning, which is unusual for me only to leave and find that a big wreck has taken place along my route to work. I say listen to that little voice in the back of you head, because there’s a good chance it knows what its’ talking about.

For those of you who haven’t started already it’s time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, papergoods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, a extra couple changes of oil and filters for your car, tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.
As the LDS say “When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.”
Or as the bible says: A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.

I have converted a few simply by asking them to turn off the ball game and DWTS and take a real good look around.
Look at how our society in the US is crumbling. God is being outright “killed”, the traditional family is dying, our government is overreaching daily, we are embroiled in foreign wars over oil, and inviting the very same people we are fighting to live amongst us. Those people live by a religious belief system that demands our enslavement or death.
We have turned our fine fighting forces into social experiment police forces, who CINC is almost certainly an imposter, brought up and foisted upon us by socialists, who dare us to say anything, and then call us racist if we do.
We have tens of thousands of anarchists in our streets daily, who want nothing more than to burn everything down.
We have MILLIONS of hypenated Americans who desire to be separate from the mainstream, and have for generations now, not worked nor do they desire to work.
I ask those that I speak to if they can actually see us continuing like we are? And just exactly who is going to lead us, the culturally fractured, into the promised land of peace and prosperity? There is no one presently who has the ability or the charisma to do so.
The answer is invariably that things are going to come apart. I then tell them they must prepare to survive the great fracturing.

Hard to prep without any money.
Several friends are saying they have that feeling but aren’t doing anything about it. Life is getting in their way. More than one has been talking about having a garden for years but there’s health issues, kids, jobs, family, etc. that they never get around to putting one in. I’m afraid it’s going to hit the fan one day soon and all these people will be scratching their heads wondering why they failed to act on that little voice.
My little voice has gone from whispering to yelling and bashing with baseball bats (yes, I’ve loosened the tin foil hat). I am far below where I want to be in preps 1) finances and 2) family who roll their eyes, but we’re dining on fresh homegrown beans, squash and salad tonight.
A lot of free "snake eater" stuff is free of the inet.
Actually, the most important preps of all require little or no money.
Becoming more physically fit is as free as modifying eating and exercise habits. There is nothing more important to preparedness than health.
Gaining certain basic skills may be very low cost (e.g. welding).
Learning and planning are free. Knowledge is power!
Some folks around here really appreciate the work Kartographer and others have done on these threads. Even those of us who have been actively preparing for decades have learned a thing or two from them.
We all know about the “snake eater” manuals, pard. When you find the US Army Field Manual on home canning you be sure to post a link to it so we can all enjoy it.
Till then why don’t you save the snarky comments for someplace else.
Some people are just bond and determined to make the Evening news by providing a background shot for some news achor by standing on a bridge somewhere waiting for FEMA to bring them a bottle of water, an MRE and a warm blanket.
You either prepare and stand on your own beholding to no one or you become dependent on others to provide your basic needs and become thier‘serf’. Me I don’t want to be beholden to anyone for providing what is needed for me and mine. I certainly don’t want to have to kiss some ‘gubberment’ third class bureaucratic to try and coax some help from them, I don’t want some ‘jack booted’ thug herding me in line and telling me where to stand, sit, eat or sleep. And last but not least I don’t want to be herded in with a bunch of ‘zombies’ and have to worry about not only trying to get basic necessities but having to fight to keep what I manage to get.
Now I ask you what’s easier telling your children and loved ones why you prepared or explaining to them why you didn’t?

It's surprisingly easy with just a little money. A 20 pound sack of rice has enough calories to feed one person for 16 days, and it costs about $10. Add in ten assorted cans of stuff to stir in (condensed soup, or similar) at about $1 a can on sale, and you can feed a family of four for a week on $20, and it stores for several years. Do the same thing with 20 pounds of spaghetti (another $20) and 20 cans of sauce (yet another $20), and you now have two weeks of food for a family of four at a total cost of $60. Similar bulk purchases of starch, canned chicken/Spam/tuna, and similar long-storage items when they are on sale can gradually stretch that emergency prep for a few weeks into an emergency prep that will last a long time. Two more details would be filling empty 2 liter soda bottles with tap water and a few drops of bleach each (details on line) and lining your basement/attic with them, so you have some emergency water, and having an ammo can stove that will burn almost anything flammable and boil water for the rice and pasta.
Most of my preps are cheap, and they actually save money because I'll buy 50 cans, packages, or pounds of whatever is on sale and then eat it over the course of a year, instead of buying the same things at full price when I actually want them. Extra ammunition isn't cheap, although a few boxes of .22 long rifle don't cost much and go a long way. Anyways, that's my thoughts. Your experience may be very different.
Excellent explanation on why to prepare. It doesn’t cost a lot if you do a little bit for a long time. Skills, such as sewing, canning, gardening, etc., will be extremely valuable in the future. There’s a wealth of free information on the internet for the taking. They can whine, gripe and mock now, but the latest prediction I heard was that 80% of the US population would not survive 18 months after an EMP attack (or financial crash, or other significant event).
Another thought ... FEMA camps ... think TSA or EPA mentality but a thousand times worse!
I started out broke 7 years ago after I got scammed buying a company.
Bought a good pump shotgun and a few boxes of shells at a pawn shop.
Bought a company in trouble where the liabilities exceeded the assets. It was cheap, but I was back in the game with my own company again.
Started eating a lot of beans and rice which I bought in 50 lb. bags at a restaurant supply.
Got a grain mill and buckets of grain from waltonfeed.com. Homemade bread with multi-grain flour is a meal by itself.
Learned how to cook food that I enjoy. Stopped wasting money eating at restaurants.
Started raising vegetables in buckets on my patio.
Each step saved enough money to finance the next step. Soon I will have everything paid off including my house.
Now that’s preppin!
