To: green pastures
I don't know that anyone here has taken a moment and put themselves into Mr. Martin's shoes. Isn't it possible that he thought his life was in danger? Isn't it possible he was “standing his ground” and trying to protect his life? The same thing that Mr. Zimmerman has been applauded for?
We don’t have a videotape of the incident, we don’t absolutely know how Martin and Zimmerman engaged. What we do think we know is that Zimmerman called the police, and Martin did not, tho he had and used a cell phone just before the incident. We also know that Zimmerman had a gun and that Martin was, we are endlessly told, "unarmed.” And the reports from the neighbors were that Martin was on top of Zimmerman, and Zimmerman was calling for help. For those who think that it was Martin who called for help, I wonder how they reconcile that theory with the fact that Martin was on top of Zimmerman, until Zimmerman shot him. Passing strange to waste your breath shouting “Help!” when you are winning the fight, and not in your own familiar stomping grounds where people know you and will help you but in conflict with someone who for all you know might have been the owner of the property you had just trespassed on.
Zimmerman knew the police would soon be there before the two of them engaged; he had just been told that on the phone. Maybe calling for the police beforehand was just his sneaky way of making it look like he did not plan to shoot Martin? Seems a bit of a stretch to me.
So far as is known, the Zimmerman version of events is not contradicted by any of the neighbors, and since the police were already on the way they had zero time to think about coordinating a lie, so they would have just told the truth.
The prosecution has no witnesses who will impeach Zimmerman’s story. And “stand your ground” has nothing to do with what you are allowed to do when someone is trying to bash your head into the cement. Retreat was not an option on the table at that moment. How do you convince a jury of a defendant’s guilt “beyond a reasonable doubt” when the evidence matches up with the defendant’s story and not with your own???
