I didn’t say hero. I didn’t lionize.
When there is crime and the cops cant stop it, the people have to.
When you have to do it yourself, you better be able to defend yourself if things do get out of hand.

When my wife hears something outside, I inspect and I am armed. If I get my ass in a situation my fists cant solve, somebody might get shot.

Otherwise I might die...or I could just stay in the house and type.

But, honestly, would you be ok with an armed, untrained neighbor from four blocks over walking through your backyard at night following somebody? I wouldn't.
