Why I chose Newt over Santorum | 'How can alternative to Romney be Romney supporter?'
World Net Daily ^ | 021112 | Chuck Norris

Posted on 02/13/2012 9:50:54 AM PST by Fred

In 2008 when my wife, Gena, and I were on the campaign trail backing former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for president, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum was fighting to get former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney elected. (Listen in this video how Santorum passionately endorsed and elevated Mitt in his bid for the Oval Office.)

Just three years ago in his interview with radio host and conservative commentator Laura Ingraham, Santorum also emphatically told millions of listening Americans: “If you’re a conservative, if you’re a Republican, there is only one place to go, and that’s Mitt Romney.”

Why an alleged conservative like Santorum would fight for the flip-flopping Massachusetts moderate on the presidential campaign trail, especially in light of the fact that Huckabee and even McCain were running then with a much clearer conservative record, I will never know.

Yet Santorum now admits that Romney “bragged he’s even more liberal than Ted Kennedy on social issues.”

Hang in there Newt

“Maybe Romney should be the one dropping out if he does poorly in Michican and on Super Tuesday. Then we can have a battle of the two conservatives.”

Until then, hang in there Newt.

Just for historical record... in 2008 Mitt Romney WAS more conservative than McCain

Look at it this way- even THE MEDIA wanted McLame more than Romney last time.

So I dont hold it against Santorum for supporting him, given the choices at the time

But let this be a lesson to all of us- NO MORE SUPPORTING RINO’s!!!

If I had to guess I would say that Santorum is going to get the negative ad blitz soon and he will drop back down to single digits. GOP-E is trying to time their anti-Romney destruction campaign so that each individual anti-Romney has no chance to win overall, even though Romney has never held a majority.

Ok, you offered a challenge. Try these things on for size:

1. Santorum's charity "Operation Good Neighbor" (2001-07), doled out just 36% of income as grants, far less than the 75% of responsible causes. It can only be coincidence the charity which spent most of its money on lobbyists, aides and fundraisers closed after he was defeated for reelection. /s

2. Santorum's "leadership PAC," called "American's Foundation," was worse--just 18% went to actual candidates. That's well below similar PACs. The rest went into overhead like trips to Starbucks for staffers.

3. The $500,000 mortgage for his Leesburg mansion came from a private bank run by a big campaign donor. By all appearances, Santorum was not eligible for the closed program since it was for high-wealth investors in the trust.

4. Santorum bilked a Pennsylvania school district out of $72,000 to pay for home "cyberschooling" of five of his kids ... in Virginia. (He makes a great Tea Party candidate, don't you think?)

5. As the third-ranking Republican, he worked closely with House majority leader Tom DeLay, now felon, on the "K-Street Project" to grow ties between the GOP and major lobbyists. Twenty-three of his own staffers landed well-paying jobs at lobbying firms. When he was fired by the PA voters? Santorum turned to lobbyists.

6. This supporter of Medicare Part D was so important to this culture of crony capitalism, an internal memo at pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline said his loss "creates a big hole that we need to fill."

7. Before anyone heard of Solyndra, on behalf of a major supporter Santorum was securing $100 million federal loans for a coal-to-liquids plant that was never built. The project's lobbyist was PA's top GOP power broker, Bob Ashner, and paid nearly $1 million.

That's seven places just to start. Besides his unheard of 18-point loss for reelection, putting electability in question there's also his hypocrisy of campaigning on requiring health insurance in 1994, on his public tort reform position vs. his testimony in his wife's own legal case, his "problem" with working women, his union pandering and more. Lots more.

What has this failed lawyer and career politician really done? What credibility does he bring to reform, what does he propose to "drain the swamp" he help create as project point-man while part of the leadership?

We all know what Romney is.

Newt's been vetted for more than a decade.

Can you honestly say you know all there is you need to know about Rick Santorum?

Don't fall for his "family values" cover; open the book on Santorum and start reading.

The idea the former third-ranking Republican is some how not part-and-parcel of the establishment is ludicrous on its face. He made his choice for traitor Spector over conservative Toomey in the senate GOP primary.

She has a heart of gold and it’s asolutely awful how much hurt she has endured from those “on our side.”

Jealously knows no bounds. Santorum has made several snide and obnoxious comments about her over the years. That one was one of his worst. I have another bookmarked that struck me wrong at the time because it had a thread of its own.

FriendofGeorge has others.

Newt Gingrich, OTOH, has praised and quoted her, so it was of no wonder to me that Todd Palin endorsed Newt Gingrich.

I’m certain he remembers Santorum’s remarks.

Santorum joined every Democrat in the Senate and 24 other Republicans in voting yes. Sotomayor was confirmed by a vote of 67 to 29.

Wow. The internet is so cool. No one can run from their record.

Santorum is my #2 choice after Gingrich but stuff like this reminds me why he is #2.

Gingrich is still my #1. I listened to his CPAC speech and I was reminded how much I like the guy. Santorum came off well, but for me its Gingrich all the way.

Santorum voted to confirm Sotomayor (and McCain didn't)? Good grief.

Obviously Sotomayor's the kind of future justice Santorum believed we needed.

He should be asked about this and a lot more.

Rick is quite petty. As an example of my research, you can go back to his comments on Sarah not speaking at the 2011 CPAC...

I noticed that during the debates. Whereas Newt would look for reasons to praise his opponents, including Santorum, including even his nemesis Romney, Santorum could never bring himself to praise Newt in return and often came off rather petty. It didn't serve him well.

Even Romney knows enough to let his minions do the dirty work and normally avoids that kind of thing in person.

Each election should not necessiarly be compared to the last election cycle...who one supports depends on who is still in the running. Like Rumsfeld said, you go to war with the army you have, not necessarily the army you want...I voted last time for Palin, if Mccain had not had her for VP he would not have gotten my vote. I have never been a Gingrich fan, but he is the best of what we have left. Santorum doesn't seem to me to be a person strong as CIC and that is the presidents first job. Protect the country from its enemies...use the military but not for building up other nations, but protecting ours...

Santorum vs the leaders of the middle east, he will be eaten alive. I cannot see him facing down the muslims that want us dead...I just hope Gingrich has the stones to face them down...the others running don't have the backbone necessary.....jmo

You can’t rewrite history, Romney was the worst choice of the three in 2008, totally unacceptable.

Agreed. It came across my Twitter feed, and it was a long read, but very worth it, and the end was PERFECT.

I am taking the liberty of excerpting it, but it really deserves it’s own thread.

“”Rather than take the luxury of being “impartial” I feel that the times our country is in dictates for us to risk whatever we can. For me it is no longer protect my tiny insignificant blog branding concerns. I’ve always been repulsed at the reporter or cameraman who feels that it is their duty to “document” disasters rather than being an American and jumping into the fire to save lives. I’d be a hypocrite if I stayed on the sidelines any longer while our country faces the most severe test in her history. I only hope the Rush Limbaugh’s and Sarah Palin’s do the same, commit to someone and start going “all in” not just to defeat Barack Obama, but in creating a revolution within the GOP. I see that you always have believed that America can be great again. And we all have to start “doing.” To let the people know, justice WILL be enforced on everyone in government, business or education who is intentionally undermining this original Constitutional intent of this country. To quit just talking about how bad things are, and registering to enforce vote integrity, walk their neighborhoods and contribute time and money where needed to revive a people who are active in holding accountable this government that “We” are supposed to be running.

Since the times are too drastic to take a chance on those with unclear political motives, or no track record of actually reforming government, it is my honor therefore, to wholeheartedly endorse you as the next President of the United States.

I am not only for you, I am with you.

We can be redeemed. Again.

Now don’t screw it up. I don’t want to look stupid.

Yours sincerely,

PolitiJim””

Are you a FReeper PolitiJim?

May God grant us strength and WISDOM.

Newt’s Plans

From his website, Newt plans to:

1. Stop the 2013 tax increases to promote stability in the economy. Job creation improved after Congress extended tax relief for two years in December. We should make the rates permanent.

2. Make the United States the most desirable location for new business investment through a bold series of tax cuts, including:
Eliminating the capital gains tax to make American entrepreneurs more competitive against those in other countries; Dramatically reducing the corporate income tax (among highest in the world) to 12.5%; Allowing for 100% expensing of new equipment to spur innovation and American manufacturing;
Ending the death tax permanently.

3. Move toward an optional flat tax of 15% that would allow Americans the freedom to choose to file their taxes on a postcard, saving hundreds of billions in unnecessary costs each year. This optional flat tax system will preserve deductions on charitable giving and home ownership, and create a new personal deduction of $12,000 for every American. This deduction is well above the current poverty level, ensuring that this new system does not unfairly target the poor.

4. Strengthen the dollar by returning to the Reagan-era monetary policies that stopped runaway inflation and reforming the Federal Reserve to promote transparency.

5. Remove obstacles to job creation imposed by destructive and ineffective regulations, programs and bureaucracies. Steps include: Repealing the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which did nothing to prevent the financial crisis and is holding companies back from making new investments in the U.S;
Repealing the Community Reinvestment Act, the abuse of which helped cause the financial crisis;
Repealing the Dodd-Frank Law which is killing small independent banks, crippling loans to small businesses and crippling home sales;
Breaking up Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, moving their smaller successors off government guarantees and into the free market;
Replacing the Environmental Protection Agency with an Environmental Solutions Agency that works collaboratively with local government and industry to achieve better results;
and Modernizing the Food and Drug Administration to get lifesaving medicines and technologies to patients faster.

6. Implement an American energy policy that removes obstacles to responsible energy development and creates jobs in the United States.

7. Balance the budget by growing the economy, controlling spending, implementing money saving reforms, and replacing destructive policies and regulatory agencies with new approaches.

8. Repeal and replace Obamacare with a pro-jobs, pro-responsibility health plan that puts doctors and patients in charge of health decisions instead of bureaucrats.

9. Fundamental reform of entitlement programs with the advice and help of the American people. Read an extended white paper on this here:

Thank you for your reply on Santorum. You raise good points. My point was I heard all the debates where the candidates were quizzed on that they would do as President. These matters you mentioned were not mentioned. Maybe now they will be so he can answer. I will see. But I am really looking for what a candidate wants to do more than what he has done in the past. This may limit my outlook but now I see Santorum as the least encumbered as one owing something to the major contributors.
