Mitt's Scorched Earth Win
American Thinker ^ | 2/1/2012 | C. Edmund Wright

While Mitt Romney may have taken a step closer to the nomination Tuesday in Florida, the scorched earth he leaves behind tells me he took a few steps further away from the White House -- and what's more, he knows it.

“To the extent negative ads are a preview of what's going to be thrown at a candidate in the general (and they are, as far as they go), this allows voters to evaluate what type of attacks they believe are more survivable against Obama.”

Who does this?

The people that read and post here at FreeRepublic? Absolutely
People that are concerned about the leftward tilt of country? Absolutely

The 30 million or so sheeple that we HAVE to get to vote with us to defeat zero? Not a chance in hell.

I spent about a decade and a half of my life in the advertising business. I never had to sell crappy candidates, but I did sell lots of crappy products. And there is a significant percentage of the population that can be reeled into the boat in either case.

The people that are ‘awake’ aren't easily fooled by the nonsense they see on television. Unfortunately the sleep walkers are. They wouldn't make any difference or concern to me except for the fact that somehow we have to get 20-30 million of their ilk to vote with us to win a Presidential election. And they WILL make their decision largely based on whatever nonsense they see on television.

And this usually gets me flamed, but it is true. Reagan was a conservative, but he was also an excellent product to sell on television. That makes a huge difference. At the end of the day, the sleep walking sheeple will make the difference in who the next President is. And they won't make their decision based on logic or common sense.

Don’t let the posting police bother you. You did what you were supposed to do by searching the title.

Oh I totally agree! BHO has a billion dollar war chest and what’s going on now in the GOP is nothing compared to what BHO’s camp will throw at the GOP candidate!!

Actually that's not right. What Romney did in Florida in two weeks would cost 500 million dollars to do in two weeks nationally. Even if Obama gets his billion, which is not likely, there's no way he could saturate the nation for the length of the campaign like that. What happened in Florida and Iowa was a saturation like you've never seen. Don't kid yourself. It was far worse than anything that can possibly happen in the General Election .

You're not wrong, but I maintain that this cycle does have a little different twist to it.

You originally said you thought it was advertising that was affecting the PRIMARY vote. That's what I disagreed with to some extent.

Your response now, it seems to me, goes to the GENERAL election. And if I'm understanding your point correctly, it seems to me that we're actually agreeing that the negative ads can have a great influence on the general election.

And that supports my previous point: that in this cycle voters are focused on defeating Obama, including to the point of thinking about what kinds of attacks might be made on whomever they nominate to run against him.

Also, you wrote:

Reagan was a conservative, but he was also an excellent product to sell on television. That makes a huge difference.

Between Romney and Gingrich, who do you think is the better "product" to sell on tv?

“Between Romney and Gingrich, who do you think is the better “product” to sell on tv?”

Romney makes my skin crawl, but then my political views are slightly to the right of Atilla the Hun. But if you had to “sell” the unwashed masses, Romeny is the better bet.

As an aside, I remember being really incensed when a co-worker told me she was going to vote for Reagan. If she'd stopped there it would have been OK, but she had to add that the reason she was voting for him was that he, “just looked more like a President than Carter did.” At that time Carter had made almost as big a mess of the country as zero has, and the only reason she can think of to decide her vote is who looks more Presidential!!!!!!! I'd like to believe that kind of thinking is exclusively in the democrap realm, but I know several Republican friends that have made comments like, "I just don't like so and so's voice" and "he just looks down too often." As if any of this crap should make and iota of difference! I just wish we had a half a Reagan available. Against Clinton, we're going to need better than we have right now.

One of the most commonly given rationales for why Santorum hasn't gotten more traction is that "he looks too young," "he looks whiney," etc.

Here's the thing, though:

Personal appearance is not destiny. IOW, it is possible for the individual's personality/charisma to cause his "looks" to be perceived differently than they might otherwise be perceived.

Not that this is going to happen in Gingrich's case. His personality would have to be very different to turn his personal appearance into an asset. It's possible, but not going to happen.

And WHY was Callista wearing all black during that speech anyway? With Gingrich's black suit and dark mood, it made them appear like The Adams Family! Just a terrible choice, from a "marketing" point of view. (But you're the expert.)

“Personal appearance is not destiny.”

I haven't heard anyone mention it, but have you noticed the change in the hildabeast’s appearance lately. And how the press is now fawning over her every move (Actually heard on a newscast, “in the debate over Syria, the US brought their big gun to the UN when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton....). While this nauseating comment was being made, we were treated to a visual of the hildabeast with a new hair style, new clothes, different make-up, etc looking regal.

Make no mistake about it - if any Republican starts getting some traction, the democraps will kneecap zero and send in the beast. They will probably try to wait till the last minute so there is little time to bring up the messes she made the last time she got near Washington. But it is obvious, the grooming has begun. One thing you have to hand to the liberals, they have a much stronger "win at all cost" attitude than we do.

I have thought for over a year now that we’d probably be facing Her Heinous in the general—and probably that she’d sweep in at the last minute to “save the country”.

She has already stepped down from all politics to “find out” just how tired she really is from serving the country for decades.

That farce is critical for her is as she must not be perceived as forcing the brother out lest she lose a large portion of that voting block.

IMO since Soros owns both Obama and her, he will decide if, when and how Obama goes (from a denunciation of his “citizenship” to take over the UN to a crazed “right wing” assassin or maybe a simple heart attack from all the stress and hard work of being president...).

If Mitt is the nominee, I think Soros will let Obama run and lose, unless of course Mean Mitt lays down and spreads like Mean John McCain did.

Soros OSI funds were part of the funding for McCain’s Reform Institute originally co-chaired by McCain and former Sen. Kerry. From Wiki: The major policy areas the institute focuses on are energy and environmental policy, homeland and national security, economic opportunity and competitiveness, immigration reform, and governance and election reform..

Soros announced at Davos that there’s not much difference between Romney and Obama which I took to indicate that he can control both of them either before or after election. A while ago he made a statement that if Obama couldn’t get things done, he’d have to be replaced.

I believe that if The Won has to be replaced, Her Heinous will be the replacement.

Mitt peed in the soup and the moderate dolts from Iowa and Florida swilled it right down. Of course, the Progressive media backed lying Mitt to the hilt which tells me that I can probably trust Newt.

In the beginning I said Newt's wonderful--if only we could trust him. Now I think we can trust him more than anyone else who is going to get a shot at this.

However, we have two problems even if Obama's money support is dropping off as I have heard it is. 1) Solyndra was a money laundering operation for him and there are 20 some other "green" laundering projects and 2) the media do his job for him. All he has to do is say something and the media will repeat it and embellish it a thousand times a day for free... Unless Soros decides to replace him with Hillary and then they'll do it for her.

I was so disgusted with what went on in Florida that I can hardly stand to look at Romney or hear his voice. I know I'm not alone. I hope to God that there are enough sentient people in enough states that he can shut Romney out and get the nomination.

Fortunately, he has stood up successfully (and with Herman Cain's help re: hillarycare) to Hillary before and I believe he can do it again and also against Obama. He's that good.

I think we'd better be ready for either of them and we WILL be inundated with vicious lies just like Romney spread. I agree with you that Newt MUST stay positive (except with the media!) and let the super PACs handle the refutations of the lies, but SOMEBODY does need to do that.

a crazed “right wing” assassin

That would be their obvious preference because they get to make zero a martyr, blame the right, and allow the hildabeast to look absolutely heroic. But that will take a lot of planning and there may not be time.

To me the most likely scenario: she'll be chosen as VP. About mid September they'll slip the proof that zero isn't eligible to be President into the hands of someone on the right. This will play into their hands that those ‘evil’ Republicans drove this poor black man from office, and now the hildabeast must put on her super cape and fight the oppressors.

On the other hand, if the Republicans continue to make fools of themselves, they may have to do practically nothing to retain the Presidency. Right now it would appear the Republican party needs no candidate to lose to - we are doing a damm convincing job of beating ourselves.

I couldn’t agree more. This needs to be said early and often.

And, yes, I did notice that the Hildebeast had begun appearing with her hair (which she’s grown out) actually styled, etc.

I’m also noticing that so far Bubba is staying out of it. That doesn’t happen by accident, either.
