Dean Kamen is very much alive. You're thinking of Jimi Heselden, OBE, who went off the cliff in trying to be courteous and give more clearance to a dog walker. Mr. Heselden had bought Segway, Inc., but had nothing to do with the invention of that device; he had made his fortune via the development of the "HESCO bastion" gabions used to fight flooding (from Katrina, for example).
