Obama to wealthy: You can’t ‘just relax and go count your money’
The Daily Caller ^ | 23 Apr 2011

Reno, Nevada (CNN) — Over and over Thursday, President Barack Obama told workers at a renewable energy company that he is like them.

He remembers pumping gas when high oil prices ate a hole in his budget, he said. He knows he wouldn’t have made it through college without scholarships and loans.

And now as president, he promised that he won’t let the current debate on deficit reduction deny others the chance for the American dream he has lived.

“We can’t ignore future deficits, but just as ignoring deficits would mortgage our future, failing to invest in our kids and our infrastructure and our basic research and clean energy, that would be mortgaging our future, as well,” he said to applause. “And I’m not willing to do it.” Ads by Google

Repeating past calls for ending subsidies for oil companies and restoring higher tax rates for the highest-income Americans, Obama defended what he called his balanced approach to deficit reduction and depicted the Republican stance as favoring the well-to-do.

“I’m rooting for everybody to get rich,” he said. “But I believe that we can’t ask everybody to sacrifice and then tell the wealthiest among us, well, you can just relax and go count your money, and don’t worry about it. We’re not going to ask anything of you.”

Did not Obama take deductions to avoid taxes. What does he need that money for? Why isn’t he being asked?

I think “pumping gas” to most people means, or meant, working at a gas station. It sounds like he doesn’t know this. I think he means pumping gas into the car that he was driving around ... but did he ever do that? I have trouble picturing it. It seems like he just thinks he’s fitting in with the common rabble with this kind of talk. To me.

"President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama paid $453,770 in federal taxes in 2010. President Barack Obama's tax return for 2010 showed he and First Lady Michelle Obama earned $1,728,096, most of which came from the sale of Obama's books, including The Audacity of Hope. The couple, who filed jointly, paid $453,770 in federal taxes and got a refund of $12,334. The Obamas' effective tax rate was about 26 percent."

Obama got a REFUND and he's telling us to pay more taxes?!?!?

Yes, I know I have some of the details/figures wrong but a week or so ago, we heard that even if all those earning over $blank were taxed at 100%, it wouldn’t cover what this govt spends.

That certainly illustrates even for sheeple that it is definitely a SPENDING problem and NOT a taxes too LOW problem.

I know some of you FReepers can word that better than I did - please do. Because it sure needs to be circulated.

Reminds me of the old lawyer joke. How can you tell if they’re lying.
With zero it’s as follows.
Q:”How can you tell when zero is lying?”
A:”His eyes are open. If his lips are moving he’s lying to us. If they’re not moving he’s lying to himself.”

The highest top marginal tax rate is 35%. The highest top marginal tax rate has evolved since 1913. Re: http://www.truthandpolitics.org/top-rates.php

Today's top marginal tax rate is certainly not the highest in our history - not even close. The wealthy and super-wealthy are aware of past tax rates and you can be assured that they love the status quo. To whom much is given (in this life) much is required. A progressive tax is fair. No man is an island. Carnegie's wealth and legacy would have been better spent on his poor workers who helped him become rich rather than on libraries and concert halls. Until we eliminate our debt and deficit, we would be wise to do the following:

1. Pass a balanced budget amendment
2. Create more tax brackets/rates that jump at, e.g., at $500K, $1M, $5M, etc. The income tax rate should range from 0% to 50% or higher depending on income.
3. Reduce the tax rate across the board only when the government has a surplus.

Most of the media pundits and other folks selling the idea that the rich and super-rich should not be taxed more are those who are rich themselves or those who depend on the rich for re-election. Many poor and middle class folks defending the rich are being sold a bill of goods. The current rate on the super rich is historically very low. We need to revise our progressive rates to vary on many more that the few brackets we have today.

Look at the highest marginal tax rates through the 50s. They averaged around 90% for Pete's sake. The nation did quite well through the 50s and there wasn't any cry of class warfare.

Gates and Buffett and other super-rich believe that they should be taxed more and they're right!

Sarah Palin WORKED her way through College. Too bad the Boy King thinks he was owed an education on somebody Else's dime.

Looks to me that Palin is the only one who understands that hard work and dedication is the key to success.

Otherwise, someone might end up with the idea that Socialism will be successful if only the right guy convinced the people to give it a try.

Hmmm, I wonder who would think like that?
