Recently Texas Republican Congressman Ted Poe reintroduced an idea whose time might have finally come. He addressed Congress asking that we review the Foreign Aid we are sending to countries around the world with the purpose of cutting most of it. Referring to the many countries with their hands out looking for Foreign Aid, Poe asked a very direct question, Why do we need to pay them to hate us?
Poes fact filled, but brief, speech contained some compelling points.
We are giving Foreign Aid money, our tax money, to 150 of the 192 countries of the world. Some of these counties are ungrateful but most of the biggest recipients are outright hostile toward us and can fairly be accused of hating us.
Among the countries Poe singled out were Venezuela and Cuba which gets $20 million of our money! The leaders of both of these countries have tried hard to be recognized as the chief America hating country in the entire world. Both of them consistently mock us and vote against us in the U.N. at every opportunity. Remember Chavez comparing President Bush to satan?
Treachery from ingrates at the United Nations Among the countries receiving American taxpayer money, these ungrateful nations support us the least in the United Nations: Ethiopia votes 91.% against us; Sudan votes 83% against us; Egypt where America is universally hated, takes our money but votes against us 82% and Mexico votes against us 63% of the time.
The practical problem with Foreign Aid
Foreign Aid is currently bundled together
.. Our taxpayer money is doled out in an all- or- nothing manner. This means in order to giving money to our strong allies in Israel we have to give money to Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro

The US Gov’t is so huge, complex and ideological, that I sometimes feel that reform is impossible.
Do we really give $20 million in aid to Cuba and Venezuela ?
Foreign aid should be a budgetary line item, and aid to most countries should be voted down. Aid to all countries that hate us or teach terrorism as a national policy should be voted down.
some of these, like Egypt, we were paying our puppets to keep the people that hate us from getting influence. Not sure why we’d pay Cuba though.
Difference is, the nutcases will take our money, laugh and try to kill us anyway.
It's just another manifestation of Liberal stupidity.
We have been the most generous nation on this planet and all we have to show for it is a bunch of losers and loser countries that bitch about our every move even our alleged allies.
Get our military out of Germany, Japan, S. Korea. We have done our part and it is time to leave. They hate us anyway.
Only after we have stopped giving money to Foreign nations and stopped every cent paid to non-citizens in this country should we then look at cutting programs which WE HAVE PAID FOR.
Because the people who vote the aid hate this country too.
An honest man has spoken!!
The time is long passed when the US can influence nations by good will and largess.
Much in recent decades has proved this policy is pointless and wasteful.
The number, logistics, nature of our enemies, in fact, the whole dynamic of world power is altered and is now unlike what we faced after the second war.
The most inept adult could not house break a dog as poorly as America has attempted to cultivate/retain allies.
Making whores of ourselves and playing patsy to every half-a$#ed national leader and raving lunatic in the ME, with enough blood on his hands to choke the whole stable, is NOT diplomacy and if our enemies and allies no longer respect (OR FEAR) us it is our own fault!
Drill here and drill NOW! Until or unless we do THAT, we have NO moral or practical leverage with these animals.
We should be aiding nobody. We’re broke.
Any “friend” who asks me for money knowing I’m in debt past my ears is no real friend of mine any way.
“Why pay people to hate you.”
You mean like alimony?
