I have a little less that a half acre. I chose well, in Southern Oregon with a South-South-East exposure. The dirt sucks, but I’ve amended with many tons of manure and compost.
I have 24 fruit trees, 17 blueberry bushes, 5 currants, 4 grape vines, kiwi fruit, ~20 raspberry vines. Those are my perennials.
I have about 11 raised planter beds averaging 40 sq. ft. each, so around 440 sq. ft. of excellent dirt with good exposure. Right now, most of it is in my wife’s dahlias. Though we do produce enough greens from two of the beds that we don’t buy any vegetables for about 4-5 months a year.
If we turned the other 9 dahlia beds into potatoes, corn and other high output crops, we could probably do it all, vege-wise. I think I have enough seeds on hand, and with trading with a seed-growing friend, could get enough plant types.
Everything is irrigated from a well that I own that the county doesn’t monitor for the volume I take.
And I have the whole thing fenced against deer, and I’m armed to the teeth to defend what I’ve built.
I have a year’s supply of wine on hand too. So, I’ll live well for at least a year. After that, my neighbor grows tempranillo grapes, so I could make my own in a pinch.
I’ll do fine. Bring it on.
eat some lettuce yourself....incubate the duck eggs and get a second flock of ducks....great in the pot.....
For more meat add rabbits...(they also like lettuce)
I agree. They are artificially raising prices.

F You Very Much William O. Douglas and cast of idiot SC justices.
They call themselves hippies. Look at their you tube videos.
Sounds good. I’ll come by and help myself - thanks!
I don't think being self sufficient makes them bad people. In fact, I too am growing my own food, but I'm not a hippie, whatever that might be...
"Im armed to the teeth to defend what Ive built"
I'd be happy to entertain visitors or the proposition of a trade for whatever you may have.
:-)
On the surface, what this family is doing seems to be lovely and helpful, but in fact, they’ve managed to trademark a long-used term (freely used long before they trademarked it), “urban homesteading” and are bullying websites left and right:

Works great until they turn off the water.

Seen a few stories on these folks over the years.......inspiration for small space gardening. Mines not that intense yet we use our garden space for best production for our needs.
Harvest during season is balanced for storage and consumption of fresh for best overall production. Last few seasons we used hanging planters above in ground as well as pergolas and trellis.
Good thread as always.....Stay Safe !
Now everyone will know who to rob, “Your rutabaga or your life!”.
People are bleeping stupid. Every molecule of water you have ever drank has been recycled through millions of toilets.
Frogmom, we decided to try raised bed gardening this year. Did you use the traditional SFG method - with the grids - or just use it as a guide line? We were going to just use the basic idea without the grids. Did you use any special soil or fertilizers? We live in Western Pa, but the tiny piece of property we own is hilly and really clay soil.
Thanks for the ping! Can’t wait to read this!!!!

Raised beds or square foot gardening...your ‘bad dirt’ is irrelevant.
