As someone who has studied history, traveled the world and spent a considerable amount of time living overseas, I can assure you that in our ever darkening world, America continues to be that shining city on the hill. Thank you expatguy, for the ping. I needed to read this sentence, as well as the other sentences, to give me a much needed blessing in the love, held in others' hearts, for our nation. There are those, in other nations, who still know of what America actually is, and I am grateful for the ping.

I dont think many people in America or the West realized that the majority of complaints concerning GITMO came from the left in America and Europe and other governments - what the people of other nations saw and heard about was different.
It says a lot about America in the way that we treat our prisoners and believe me - the "common man" in many countries saw this.
