All this may sound like a lot but it really isn't and you can be rewarded with a really nice companion dog and watchdog. If she is going to be around children, start her early but dont let them hurt her. then she will nip to protect herself and she gets the blame.
I myself think we need to be finding out totally who is funding wikileaks and start leaking their real agenda of wanting the destruction of America capitalism and freedom to make way for national socialism of one world government. JA has stated this is his goal. He wants us to bulkanized our communications to effectively makes us more vulnerable to attack from within as well as from our outside enemies.
I think wikileaks was started as a clearing house of information for those in charge to gather secret intelligence on countries and under the guise of the transparency of exposing corruption they disseminate tidbits while keeping the really big stuff and black mailing the powers that be to bend to their will. Just my take on the situation.
Behavior modification discipline and training works quite well.
What’s his face . . . can’t think of his name—the TV dog whisperer essentially, Spanish name, IIRC, is very good in his suggestions.
Many dogs, like people, crave affection and attention. That can be a big reward along with (when training) small bits of dog biscuits.
I tended to start with SIT! Firm and forceful but even toned and not harsh unless the dog has the idea but refuses or is too energetic to do it.
I guess there’s some school of thought that you don’t push the dog’s rear down with your hands. I didn’t go by that rule. If the dog needed to be shown what the command meant, I helped his body align with the command—not necessarily harshly but firmly.
Then I would go to DOWN! meaning lay down.
I believe single word commands work best. Preferably with clear beginning and ending sounds—hard kinds of sounds vs mushy.
Dogs go a LOT by tone. Sensitive dogs don’t need and don’t handle well, a harsh tone.
There’s online instructions for house breaking. Have always had outside dogs so that wasn’t a big issue. Sister had a poodle, would be so excited on the folks’ return home would pee all over the carpet in the entry way. They had to just open the door and let the dog out first thing.
After SIT and DOWN, I’d go to DEAD to play dead; SHAKE to shake hands/paws; STAY to stay put while I walked away. COME to COME; OVER to roll over. I’d also use NO! about jumping up on people. You can also use SPEAK for barking on command. I have a good dog bark I learned from my Lassie type collie that’s difficult to impossible to tell from a real dog so it’s useful in teaching them to speak.
I didn’t teach to FETCH or GET because Dad hated the nusance his old dog was on that score. May need to teach the Blue Healer to do it to help run some of his energy off.
Good dogs return love and affection incredibly. They tend to be faithful beyond sensible—even in the face of horrific abuse.
However, one does well to establish who is the ALPHA MALE immediately. Obedience above fun and games is essential. An uncontrollable dog is almost worse than an uncontrollable child.
That’s about it from my perspective.
Thanks for the honor of your asking.
Good points. Thx Thx.
thank you — though isn’t spaying a bit dangerous for the dog?
1000 silverlings has some excellent dog pointers.
Spaying is not dangerous; some mastiffs are sensitive to the anesthetic and need a special kind, otherwise, spaying is excellent for dogs. They live longer, and more healthy in my opinion. It also lessens any aggression the female may tend to develop, neutering does the same thing for males. Plus there aren’t any unwanted litters.
Unless you are breeding on purpose, there is no reason to have a dog that is not “fixed.”
That bit about training the dog when young is very informative. Thank you — I think the bit about having an old wool blanket is a splendid point and will help me a lot. Thanks!

Thanks for these points -- training the puppy should be a lot of effort but rewarding

one of our relatives here got their older dog fixed (not sure how old the dog was, but definitely more than a couple of years) and she died on the operating table. The dog was a Schnauzer.
it used to be, but now there’s a quick test they can do to see if the dog is allergic to the sedative, your vet can do it before hand. you dont want a dog in heat in your apartment, or other dogs breaking in while you’re gone, and or puppies, like 9 or 10 to give to your friends.. Also she will be much happier.
yes, just start by putting it on the floor with her toys, then when she’s in the house encourage her to play and sleep on it.
and some puppies must pee twice, so dont think you’re done at one when you’re walking her, lol
Well, be sure you have a good vet. Mine was up-to-date on the anesthesia issues, and my six month old mastiff was in otherwise excellent shape. My min-pin was spayed at 9 months, because I got her when she was that age. She did not get fat, she lived 15 years, and even when she got a brain tumor, she lived another peaceful 5 months. All the rescues we got over the years were also neutered, most by the local humane society. No surgery was ever a problem.
One thing to avoid when training, just say the word one time, softly, do not repeat, “Sit, sit, sit, sit, sit...” etc. Help the dog do what you want, then praise and pet. “Good dog,” and a warm rub means a lot to a puppy. Make a distinct gesture with your hand, like pointing to the floor when you give the command, and sooner or later, the dog will obey gestures as well as verbal commands. Make it a gentle gesture, not a forceful one — that’s scary to a puppy.
Just softly say, sit, pointing to the floor, and help the puppy sit. Then praise him/her. Do it two or three times, then play a bit, then do it again two or three times, then play with tossing a sock or something. Again with the sit lesson...that’s how I did it. My mastiff is well trained, he doesn’t even bark unless I whisper “speak.” He will growl, if another dog is barking.
Dogs can hear so well, they really pay attention to whispers.
It’s worth starting as early as possible. And can be fun.
However, as you might expect, puppies have very short attention spans. They train better as they get a bit older.
However, it’s not wise to wait . . . especially regarding the basic SIT and DOWN. Some day it will take and be a safety as well as frustration preventing thing that’s established.
It can be frustrating getting there with an extremely young puppy. However, with bright dogs, even young puppies learn surprisingly fast in many cases.
May God bless both of you.
yes, show us a picture when you get her. Dogs are different, but some like nonfat treats like carrots, apples, pears. Over the years I’ve had ones that also loved a slice of raw yam, baked yam and yellow squash. Mine get a healthy dose of vegetables and meat every morning along with a high quality dog food. Also if you feed her in the morning before leaving for work, she wont be frantically hungry by the time you come home. I leave a pup kibble all day tho as they need to eat. And a heavy dish for water that she cant turn over and play with.
>> Have you tried doing that in C++ graphics?
My interest is simply theoretical. What is ‘dwhs’?
