Woah. Adrian Lamo (the blinking insomniac hacker who snitched out Bradley Manning) answering questions from a mostly hostile audience during the ‘Informants: Villains or Heroes?’ panel at HOPE Conference #8:’The Next Hope/Hackers on Planet Earth’ (NYC July 16-18). Via John Young, Cryptome.org, vigilant-snitch.htm.

From TheNextHope.org:

[...] The leaker [Manning] had reportedly boasted to hacker Adrian Lamo (after seeing his name in a Wired article) about sending 260,000 U.S. State Department classified documents to wikileaks.org. According to Lamo, that claim was enough to make him decide to call the authorities and become an informant. [...]

Let’s jump in at part-3 and watch the sparks fly — audio isn’t great with the first question, but hang in there…

Video part-3

Part-5. Things get even nastier. A Vietnam veteran in the audience opines: “What you did is worse than treason. I think you belong in Guantanamo.”

Phiber Optik, a panelist [from 5:20 in part-5]:

“[...] As long as the hacker underground has existed, we’ve always held in very high regard our neutrality. As our European colleage pointed out, we’re internationalists and should remain so. As soon as you make up your mind to choose a side (politically speaking), you cease to be a hacker.” [Applause]

Unbelievable. It's becoming increasingly obvious to me that there is only one way out of this 21st-century mess, and it involves thousands of overworked firing squads.

Well when the commies take over, they will be among the first to go, so.

A lot of these “hacker” are anarchists. Well, they very well might get what they want, anarchy.

And most of them won’t last a week before they are dead or somebody’s literal slave.

Idiots, the lot of ‘em.

Yup. Regardless of who wins - the marxists or the (hopefully resurgent Constitutionalists - they’re in for a bad time. Ironically, they are in for a FAR worse time if the side they’ve picked wins.

Hence Stalin’s term “useful idiots,” which I change to “useless idiots.”

The idiot in the audience that said hackers have to be internationalists, or they aren’t hackers... that’s the kind of guy that’s leaking classified docs.
