Union Thugs Should Face Lethal Force

Although it occurred a week ago, the siege of a bank employee's home in Maryland by 500 union thugs has been a story slow to build steam. Talk radio, Fox News, and a few blogs have been the only outlets for what surely would have dominated headlines everywhere if the trespassers were Tea Partiers and the home was Democratic.

The Washington Examiner, in an editorial published today, deftly describes the experience:

Imagine you are sitting at home on a peaceful Sunday when you hear buses pull up in front of your house [which] begin disgorging hundreds of angry people waving signs with threatening messages, shaking their fists and crowding onto your lawn. Soon, hundreds of screaming people are tromping on your flower beds, peering into your windows, and scaring neighbors who nervously begin placing calls to 911.

As the noise levels rise and demonstrators start banging on your front door, you begin to fear that something very bad is about to happen. Then you spot the police cars, and relief floods over you. "At least the cops will keep things under control," you tell yourself. But your relief is shattered when you realize the cops you thought were there to protect you are actually from another jurisdiction and they are there because they escorted the mob to your address.

This was the scene at Greg Baer's home in Bethesda, Maryland on Sunday last. Baer is deputy general counsel for Bank of America. The thugs who placed his home under siege were organized by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). The thugs were escorted by police from Washington DC, operating outside their jurisdiction without notifying local authorities.

The only person inside the Baer home when the demonstrators and D.C. cops arrived was one of Baer's young sons, who locked himself in the bathroom until his father arrived to rescue him after bravely forcing his way through the crowd. Eventually, the Montgomery County police appeared on the scene, and the demonstrators later departed.

No arrests were made. No citations were issued. No warnings were given. On his nationally syndicated radio show, Glenn Beck reported the police excused their inaction by stating "no law had been broken."

Folks, let me ask what kind of law protects a mob of trespassers intimidating a man's family in their own home, while ignoring private property rights? It is certainly not the natural law upon which our republic was erected.

Where is Montgomery County Sheriff Raymond M. Kight on this? As the chief law enforcement officer in his county, should he not have something to say about the intrusion of DC police into his jurisdiction without permission or notification? Is he not bound to defend the life and property of his constituents, along with their right to defend themselves? These have become silly questions in an age where private property does not truly exist.

Nowadays, when we see a sign indicating "trespassers will be shot," we may be inclined to scoff. Certainly, here in the state of Minnesota, such a sign would constitute a laughable threat. As a Minnesotan, if your home is invaded, you are obligated by statutory law to remain ideal and allow your property to be violated or stolen. You may defend your lives or the lives of others, but only under "imminent threat," which translates to using force at the last possible moment before harm would come to you or another.

Consider that. If you are woken in the middle of the night by the sound of shattering glass in the next room, arm yourself, investigate, and shoot dead an intruder, you are going to jail.

One may assume the law makes no more sense in Maryland. In a sane world, Baer would have been able to defend his property, and the sanctity of his home, with lethal force. Instead, we live in a world where police (themselves unionized) aid and abet the violation of natural rights, while statutory law actually prevents people from defending their homes and families.

This cannot stand. We must reacquire and reassert an accurate understanding of private property rights. If you find appalling the idea someone could be shot dead in the act of trespassing or stealing, it would be wise to think again. Without the capacity to defend one's property, one's inalienable rights are not secure. The modern axiom "it's just property; it can be replaced" ignores what replacing property requires. Property represents the productive effort of the owner acting upon his own judgment. To rob, steal, or trespass is to deny the owner the product of his effort. It is a degree of slavery. While death is an extreme punishment for property crime after the fact, the threat of death or great bodily harm is the only sure protection an owner has against a criminal intrusion in progress.

The bottom line is this. In much of America today, criminals are protected under statutory law better than law-abiding citizens. This is a manifestation of Progressivism, which abhors the concept of private property and, whether by escorting thugs or "redistributing wealth," elevates crime to official business.

Yeah, well - at one point someone will put paid to the president’s Stürmabteilung. Then what?

Wow I could never live in a state with such laws.

God bless Texas and keep her free.

According to the national right to work foundation newsletter, the SEIU will be making "home visits" with Illinois home care workers who haven't yet been forced into the union.

The additional 4,500 home-care providers who are not yet under union control soundly rejected unionmembership by a two-to-one margin in a mail-in vote. However, per Quinn’s executive order, the home-care providers may again be subject to out-of-state SEIU and American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union organizers making “home visits” attempting to organize the home-care providers through coercive “card check” unionization tactics.

Wonder how this will apply:

Thursday, May 20, 2010

On Thursday, May 20, 2010, Governor Martin O’Malley (D) signed into law a long awaited self-defense measure giving Maryland’s law-abiding citizens the ability to protect themselves and loved ones from harm.

Senate Bill 411(PDF), sponsored by State Senator Mac Middleton (D-28), provides civil immunity from damages when force, including deadly force, is used under reasonable circumstances to repel an attack in the person’s dwelling or place of business. Pursuant to Maryland law, this measure will be effective on October 1, 2010.

And the police did not do a thing. People, CW2 has indeed started. The question is not if, but when, the shooting starts.

This sounds like a job for Xe (Blackwater International) Corporation. The businessmen being targeted have more than enough resources to rent a company of riot control personnel from Xe, as well as intelligence information as to when and where SEIU is planning to attack.

Within a few minutes, a hundred equipped Xe personnel would arrive on scene to insure that the union thugs remain on public property. They may even bring with them noise cancellation equipment that to a great extent would neutralize bullhorns and other noisemakers.

That would be great, especially since the police in that area seem incapable of doing their duty. They should be ashamed, and their boss should be fired.

The kid at home, in fear for his life, should have made good use of dad’s hunting rifle...

A few dead thugs would go a long way towards discouraging others.

I was thinking the same. These thugs are courageous with a bullhorn and while kicking cancer patients at town hall meetings. Facing a homeowner defending his/her turf would make them run for sure like the rats they are. Couple of shots in the air and it would have been a different story for sure!
