On Tuesday, I reported that a plane had crashed in Iran and seven people had been killed. Defense News is reporting that the plane that crashed was participating in Tuesday's military parade in Tehran, and that it was Iran's one and only AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System).
Iran's sole Simorgh AWACS aircraft was lost during a military parade Sept. 22, one of two Iranian military aircraft that crashed in Tehran while participating in a display to mark the anniversary of the start of the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War.
The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force operated a single Simorgh, a former Iraqi Air Force Adnan. The Adnan AWACS was in turn a modification of a Soviet-built Ilyushin Il-76 transport.
The Simorgh collided with one of the Air Force's Northrop F-5E Tiger II fighters over the area of the Imam Khomeyni Shrine, southern Tehran. According to eyewitnesses, the crash occurred immediately after the parade. Apparently, no mayday call was issued.
Both aircraft crashed in flames. Initial reports indicate that seven crewmembers were killed in the crash.
In total, Iraq built three AWACS aircraft, one Baghdad, and two Baghdad-2s, the latter later renamed Adnans. One Adnan and the Baghdad were evacuated to Iran during the 1991 Gulf War, while the second Adnan was destroyed on the ground by a coalition air strike in January 1991.

Isn't an AWACS all about airspace CONTROL?
Gee, it saves the Israelis having to contend with it helping protect the Iranian nuclear sites against an attack by the Israeli Air Force.
No wonder Bibi said Iran was weak. They can’t even run a parade without loosing aircraft.
Yes.
Stratch one AWACS!
First thing you take out is the eyes in the sky. Is this God’s way of preparing the battlefield for his chosen people? I’manutjob is in NY so command and control could be weak back home. Now is the time!
It was the JOOOOS!
Now’s the time Israel!
That is a nice touch!
You know, I rather think it was.

Eye witnesses reported that the flaming planes landed on the mausoleum burial site of the Islamic revolution’s founder Ruhollah Khomeini.
And don’t simply try to take out the sites “cleanly”. Having a national shrine to nuclear weapons which can only be viewed from a long distance may convince the imams and ayatollahs to get out of the nuclear weapons business because there is no future in it.
I wonder hwat he status of the second AWACS is. Tow were flown from Iraq to Iran during the first gulf war.
That had to be Mossad. You can’t tell me that’s a coincidence.
Rumor is they were using parts from the two to keep one in flyable condition. Scratch one, and the other is a hanger queen. And scratch an F-5E. They are short of those as well.
You know, we are no longer even working hard at being a Christian nation, and we still have the best standard of living, health, and liberty in the world, thanks to God's grace. They blow up their kids to kill the Infidel, lose thousands to stampedes during their religious days (which seem to come every fifteen minutes), get washed off the Earth wholesale in tsunamis, and get their hands and heads chopped off for whistling, flying kites, or showing a little ankle. One must conclude that either their little tinpot deity Allah either is a puny, pathetic, ineffectual, little wisp of a demon baal-pretender, or else he REALLY hates his followers.
The only reason I can think of their continued allegiance to him is either sheer gullibility or the glassy eyed stare of a thousand kill-crazy Ayatollahs and Imams...which pretty much goes to prove my first point.
Yeah, they’re a major threat to us. </s>
