Illegal Immigrant Hero Father Deserves Medal and Visa, not Deportation

"The capacity to love is a vital, rich and all-consuming function...you can find nobility and sacrifice and love wherever you may seek it out..."--Rod Serling

Hero father Manuel Jesus Cordova Soberanes gave up his attempt to come to the United States and instead turned himself over to the Border Patrol, all to save the life of a injured nine-year-old American boy. Cordova found the boy wandering in the Arizona desert after the boy's mother was killed in a car crash on Thanksgiving Day. Cordova, who was promptly deported, said:

"I am a father of four children. For that, I stayed. I never could have left him. Never."

Cordova and the boy are pictured. According to the Associated Press:

"The 26-year-old bricklayer was two days into his walk and about 50 miles from Tucson when he saw the boy, who had walked away from the crash...Christopher had scrapes on his leg and was dressed in shorts despite the desert cold. The boy had his dog with him and was holding a side mirror from the wrecked van.

"Neither Cordova nor Christopher spoke the other's language, but the boy took the migrant to the edge of a canyon and showed him the accident site...

"'I felt frustrated and sad because I couldn't do anything for the mother,' Cordova said. 'And I didn't know how to console the boy, so I just sat next to him.'"

"Cordova gave the boy the sweater he was wearing, climbed down to the van, and found chocolate and cookies to feed him.

"He then built a bonfire, and the two hunkered down. The boy slept most of the night; Cordova kept watch and tended the fire [which he hoped the Border Patrol would see]. Fourteen hours later, a group of hunters found the pair and called for help. U.S. Border Patrol agents took Cordova into custody, and Christopher was flown to a hospital in Tucson."

The story is Illegal immigrant ‘never’ thought to leave boy: Man comforted child after mom died in Arizona desert crash, officials say (Associated Press, 11/28/07), and be sure to watch the MSNBC video on the same page.

According to the story, the Mexican consulate in Nogales is "working to obtain a short-term visa for Cordova so he can come to Arizona and be recognized for his actions." I think instead the US government should send him a legal permanent Visa and invite this hero to come to the US. I have a nine-year-old child and am grateful that, were she ever in a desperate strait, there are men like Cordova out there who are willing to make sacrifices like this in order to help a child.

It’s great what he did, but he’s still a criminal - if somebody was breaking into a house and came across somebody in the house who was having a heart attack and called 911 and saved the person, that doesn’t excuse the fact that they were breaking into the house in the first place.

Good for this man, character should be recognized and encouraged. In case anyone has forgot, character is doing the right thing when no one is looking. I’ll need some more evidence though before it changes my opinion that this man is the exception and not the rule of those streaming across our southern border.

Give him a first class ticket back to where he came from instead of a bus ride, nothing more.

Saving people that US citizens do not want to save.

No one ever said that the millions crossing illegally aren't human beings with all the emotions and attitudes that humans have.

But the fact that there are millions breaking our laws, changing our country against our will, and not being in the least bit apologetic about that is the reason that the occasional act of selflessness goes un-rewarded.

Were the magnitude of this immivasion not the tsunami it is, people like Jesus might be rewarded with a magnanimous act of dismissal of his own crime.

But no one is in the mood anymore for even that. Even giving an inch occasionally is now too much. And so the BP does what it does, even in this case.

It may change - someone in the government might make an exception in this case. But undoubtedly the agitators will be pushing for it in an attempt to score points: look for shrieking real soon from LULAC, La Raza and MALDEF.

And never make the mistake of thinking "they only want to work". The intent from the side or organizations like that is to seize political power in the U.S., nothing more.

It is their cynicism and desperation for power over the hated Gringos that will drive them to exploit this incident for their own sickening purpose.

I have no problem with rewarding the one in 2,000,000 that performs an outstanding act of kindness and self sacrifice.

Absolutely no more than that, though.

The next time you hear some illegal immigrant-supporter refer to "those selfless, heroic immigrants," think of Jose Carranza

Dead on. And for every Jesus Soberanes there have been 10 Jose Carranza's.

If anyone helped my family, or even my neighbor's family out like this, I'd certainly sign on to sponsor their visa or, being financially unable to do, would find someone or a group of people who could. Cordova, by his selfless act, has demonstated he would make a good American.

During the May shamnesty debate in the U.S. Senate, Senator Cornyn introduced a mild-mannered amendement to exclude felons, gang-bangers and other clearly defined undesireables from the amnesty bill. It was voted down. What does that tell you about what our overlords had in mind?

Why was it so surprising that the American public rejected the entire load of apples when we were told we couldn't even inspect, much less pick out the rotten apples?

This American would like to put out the welcome mat to good immigrants like Cordova. But this American is also getting tired of being told we can't just pick out the good ones.

You're not really following this issue, are you?

But apparently if it happened at this guy’s house, he’d offer the man his guest bedroom and a place at the dinner table :-)

You can't be and say what said in your previous post. Illegals are committing more and more crimes every day. They are getting used to the sense of entitlement that acceptance of their illegality brings. Committing the crime if being here illegally without consequence is emboldening them to commit more and more crimes.

As I said I think this guy’s “good deed” is the exception and not the rule of the mass of people streaming across our southern border. Please seek the definition to the word “exception”, i.e. not the norm.

Ooops. I reread your first post. My misunderstanding. Sorry.
