Tom Hayden: Cindy Sheehan's War
Yahoo News ^ | 8/14/05 | Tom Hayden: Cindy Sheehan's War

Posted on 08/16/2005 11:49:43 AM PDT by freema

Cindy is winning the war for meaning. Only the families, friends, and buddies of the dead can carry this lonely burden for the rest of us. As they do, peace movement slogans like "bring them home now" will have deep resonance with all Americans.

"Robert Jay Lifton reported this phenomenon among Vietnam-era soldiers and their families. He wrote that 'when the alternative survivor mission takes hold, victims become ignoble sacrifices, products of crual deception. Their deaths then have meaning only in serving to expose the grotesque truths of the war. The alternative survivor mission can become one of oppostion to the war, its advocates, and their policies.' Lipton writes further: '[we become] survivors of a death encounter, and survivors of all kinds are hungry for the meaning of that encounter - meaning that is inevitably associated with the authority of the dead.'"

Is this the same radical Left wing anti-capitalist who received 10 million dollars in the divorce settlement from Jane Fonda and lives in the tony almost lily white suburb of Santa Monica?
And people wonder why many of us who grew up in the Sixties became so jaded about"The Movement"!

This is a guy who is too liberal even to get elected Mayor of Los Angeles.

This is a guy, who when Joan Baez criticized the Viet Cong for human rights abuses, denounced Baez as a "tool of the CIA."

Barbara Boxer looks like a conservative compared to this nutjob.

These people can't get away with what they did in the 60s.

Send this to Tom......

Finally, I think one must deny to anyone the right to ventriloquize the dead. Casey Sheehan joined up as a responsible adult volunteer. Are we so sure that he would have wanted to see his mother acquiring "a knack for P.R." and announcing that he was killed in a war for a Jewish cabal? This is just as objectionable, on logical as well as moral grounds, as the old pro-war argument that the dead "must not have died in vain." I distrust anyone who claims to speak for the fallen, and I distrust even more the hysterical noncombatants who exploit the grief of those who have to bury them."  ( Christopher Hitchens)

Tom Hayden's an old man now, and yet he's never in his life been right about anything at all. Quite a record.

I'm not so sure about that, you might be short-changing Barbara Boxer there...
