Libertarians Look for a State to Call Their Own. (Free State Project)
The Everett Herald (WA) | 2/23/2003 | reprint from the Baltimore Sun

Plans are under way for an invasion of New Hampshire. Or Wyoming. Or maybe Delaware, Montana or Alaska. Sparsely populated and independent in spirit, they're all attractive targets for a certain bloodless coup in the making.

Within the next several years, according to the plan, 20,000 Libertarians would move to a single state and begin infiltrating. They'd get jobs, join civic groups, get elected and take a hatchet to taxes and laws. In this utopia called the Free State Project, schools would be severed from the state, gun-control laws abolished, drugs legalized, health and social services privatized, and most federal aid rejected. Government's only job would be to protect against "force and fraud."

The last paragraph did not run in the printed edition.

I didn't think the FSP was "officially" a Libertarian party org. and I still don't. I think the paper got confused because most (not me) members are Libertarians for obvious reasons.

When that didn't work, Glennie came up with the idea of a Libertarian space colony.

That has a certain ironic appeal to it.

This effort is laughable, since a room with 10 Libertarians in it will break into 4 separate factions (and one independent guy), with each faction shifting and calling all the rest "a bunch of statists". In the end, the lone independent will leave, grumbling that all the rest aren't visionary - and he will be the one they choose to run as a candidate for statewide or national office.

So although getting 1,000 self-avowed Libertarians to move to Fort Collins wasn't realistic or feasible, supposedly a space colony will. You can't make up stories as loony as this!

If someone is as deluded as they are, utopian wistfulness never has to be tempered by reality. Most of 'em would make excellent 5th Napoleons at nuthouse poker games.

(As if the air in space is any freer!) Grandiose plans coupled with meager resources will seldom escape humiliation and defeat. These poor ideologues are doomed to lives of unhappiness, choking and sputtering in the foul stench of American self-governance.

The counter-attack team of pc screaming idiot anti-liberty statists along with crowds of illegal/legal immigrants formerly from third-world thug-governments (who neither embrace nor grasp the traditions of liberty or our constitution) will be retargeted to MIRV into that state. Outnumbering the free-staters, the state govt then gets custom-remade into a welfare/pc tyranny.

Unless ... you discover how to cure pc screaming idiots, etc., transforming the state into a paradise of liberty. Then export the cure to the other 50 states, then to the rest of the world.

It is hard to tell a True Libertarian from a True Anarchist, except maybe the former isn't young enough to hitchhike from Portland to the latest WTO conference.

Libertarian space colony

They made a movie about it. 'Lost in Space', wasn't it?
