A New York business arts student has been jailed for a year in Dubai after she tapped an airport security officer on the arm during a strip search as they checked her medical waist binder and left her half-naked.
Elizabeth Polanco De Los Santos, 21, who attends Lehman College in the Big Apple was heading to New York from Istanbul with a friend when they were detained during a ten-hour layover at Dubai International Airport on July 14.
But what she thought would be a short stop in the UAE has turned into a months-long nightmare, after airport security was alerted to a brace De Los Santos was wearing with underwiring on it. She told airport officials she had recently had surgery and was mandated to wear the surgical brace around the clock.
She was carted off to a private room and instructed to remove the brace, leaving her semi-naked and feeling 'violated'. She was eventually cleared to go, but since she was unable to get the brace back on herself, she 'gently' touched one of the female customs officer's arm to get her friend to help her.
The female officers accused De Los Santos of 'assaulting and insulting' them, which Santos denied. She was forbidden to travel home, and this week was sentenced to a year behind bars despite paying a AED 10,000 ($2,722) fine.
Judges had ordered De Los Santos to pay the fine on August 24, but instead of being allowed on her way, customs officials appealed the sentence.
She has now undergone a months-long ordeal and had to fork out $50,000 to afford accommodation in the expensive nation along with lawyers costs.

The offense actually occurred in Sharjah, Dubai’s grottier neighbour. I was driving in my agent’s car and the police pulled me over as they thought they saw a woman in the car with me.
I had, at that time, a Mississippi driving license, and the po-po had never heard of such a country, nor did their meager atlas have any information on such a jurisdiction. It was getting late, and they would not release the car, so I just bagged it in their humble hoosegow, which at that time resembled an old mud fort. The next morning they sprung me, still bewildered regarding the mythical land of Mississippi.
There was, alas, no woman in the car.

Yup—noticed that. If she made that claim to security all kinds of red flags would go up....
Why is it that the men on this Forum are quick to defend the muslim females in the airport over an American who happens to be a woman? It's only common decency for us not to expect cruelty from another woman in an intimate setting with one's clothes off. But women in muslim countries are the morality police who go around beating other women with sticks if their hair is not completely under the hijab or their ankle slips into view.
It's always the C- and D-students with a little bit of power who follow the negative rules most stridently once they get the chance to lord it over others. Look at our female TSA agents or HOA board presidents as other examples.

I think we can tell by her picture that she was likely screaming at the authorities there. Perhaps a year or so in the cooler will help her to be more humble in the future.

Everyone portrays themselves as gentle, non-confrontational victims who made some innocuous gesture or movement.
I guess I've become a bit jaded after hearing so many stories with that kind of *victim* portrayal, only to find out the real details later.
People keep on petting the pretty leopards and then act surprised when they get bit.
Go there all you like. My family will avoid because in mohammedan society only the wishes of the dominate mohammedan male matter and I do not pet leopards.
You should have tried slapping / manhandling the arresting officers, like the woman in this story; I'm sure that that would have helped! /sarcasm

The common word for Black people in Arabic is “abd”, which also means “slave”.
Eventually everything ceases to exist but I'm not sure either one of those scenarios will happen for a very long time.
It would certainly be nice for the world if one or the other came to pass.
