FYI, “thongs” is Australian slang for flip-flops.
We always used that hear in the U.S., until sometime in the 2000a, when people took it to mean something else.

They were here also until some dips started pulling strings between between their cheeks.
That’s what they were called in the Midwest in the 60s. Not sure when it went away. Probably when the thong bathing suit was introduced.
Every Memorial Day the Drugs-plus-everything-else drug store had them in their weekend ad. Usually something like “Thongs, 19¢”
We bought them most years. And spent the summer in those, barefoot, or if it really called for it, out last school-year’s gym shoes.
