Male Writers at Liberal Outlets Sent Misogynist Tips to Breitbart, Other News Women Need to Know

Dear women,

We tried very hard to remain optimistic this week, but it’s time to admit that this wasn’t a great week for women. So, let’s start with the little good news we do have.

The good news • The Norwegian FA has announced that it’s almost doubling the financial compensation female soccer players will receive from 3.1 million Norwegian kroner ($390,000) to 6 million kroner ($750,000). Even better news: Male players are paying for part of that out of their own fees. This new agreement will lead to men and women receiving equal compensation. Equal pay for men’s and women’s sports has been much debated in recent times: Just last year, five top players on the American women’s soccer team filed a wage-discrimination complaint, accusing U.S. Soccer of paying them and their teammates roughly a quarter of what the men’s national team receives.

• The New York Times reports that some women, frustrated with the persistent gender gap at large corporations, are now starting their own companies instead. Additional benefit? Companies run by women have much less of a gender gap than male-dominated organizations.

The bad news • At least three women allegedly lived through a nightmarish scenario that wouldn't seem out of place for a thriller movie: they're claiming that Boston University geologist David Marchant sexually harassed them during research trips on Antartica. One says that Marchant hurled rocks at her while she was urinating, repeatedly pushed her down a steep slope, called her a "slut" and a "whore," and asked her to have sex with his brother, who was also on the expedition. According to Science magazine, Marchant plans to deny the allegations.

• Another week, another string of abuse by famous and powerful men coming to the fore. The biggest story of the week was The New York Times' report on mega-producer Harvey Weinstein and the sexual harassment cases he has covered up for three decades. Weinstein is said to have paid off at least eight settlements, with more and more industry players confessing that his behavior was an open secret. By this time, many Democrats are giving Weinstein's contributions (he is a big time donor who supported Hillary Clinton) to women's charities, while Weinstein himself has taken a leave of absence.

• That wasn't the only case of alleged sexual assault this week, unfortunately. A woman claims that she was raped by rapper Nelly on his tour bus. Nelly was arrested on Saturday morning and released shortly after. He denies the allegations.

• Buzzfeed reports that several male writers at seemingly progressive publications sent misogynist story ideas to Breitbart's Milo Yiannopolous. This group includes a former writer at Slate and the former managing editor of Vice's feminist women's platform, Broadly.

In case you've missed it • The House has passed a nationwide bill that bans abortion after 20 weeks.

• Feminist dating app Bumble is now expanding into networking.

• We visited a "momtrenrepeur" conference, and perhaps you should too.

• San Juan mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz had the best retort to Trump calling her a "nasty" woman. She wore a NASTY slogan-tee to appear on tv.

• More and more women are choosing to marry themselves, in the ultimate act of female solidarity.

• The Trump administration is rolling back the Obama-era mandate that employers, insurance companies, and colleges have to fund birth control. This is why it's a bad idea.

• On the anniversary of the release of Trump's Access Hollywood tape, a women's rights group played in on loop in Washington D.C.

• Women, it's time to trash your Venus Gillettes. Here's a manifesto for stopping with shaving.

• Apparently, the corporation that funded the Fearless Girl statue paid its female and black employees less than their white counterparts.

How about just abolishing the separation of men’s and women’s sports in all categories. Let the women compete with the men for spots on a team or in individual tournaments (tennis etc.).

What could possibly be fairer than that?

There are no white females then?
