'Cheap sex' is making men give up on marriage
NY Post ^ | September 2, 2017 | Larry Getlan

Thanks to cheap sex, marriage may be doomed.

The share of Americans ages 25-34 who are married dropped 13 percentage points from 2000 to 2014. A new book by sociologist Mark Regnerus blames this declining rate on how easy it is for men to get off.

Regnerus calls it “cheap sex,” an economic term meant to describe sex that has very little cost in terms of time or emotional investment, giving it little value.

Regnerus bases his ideas, in part, on the work of British social theorist Anthony Giddens, who argued that the pill isolated sex from marriage and children. Add online pornography and dating sites to the mix and you don’t even need relationships.

The result is “two overlapping (but distinctive) markets, one for sex and one for marriage, with a rather large territory in between comprised of significant relationships of varying commitment and duration,” Regnerus writes in “Cheap Sex: The Transformation of Men, Marriage, and Monogamy” (Oxford University Press).

In generations past, women generally made men wait until marriage to have sex. To get a wife (and, therefore, sex), men had to be clean and presentable and have a good job. This, Regnerus reasons, gave men all the motivation they needed to become respectable members of society.

Now with porn on-demand and greater reproductive freedom, sex is a commodity available at any time. This has left men with little motivation for marriage, writes Regnerus, who cites demographer Steven Ruggles’ prediction that one of every three people in their 20s will never marry.

>>>When I come home from a week long jury trial on a Friday night the last thing I want to “handle” is a wife.<<<

Well said. My first wife was not a helpmate per Genesis 2:18. she was a feminist through and through. We would fight like cats and dogs. She would not submit. At the time living God’s way wasn’t part of my life so I couldn’t quite see the problem. William, I wish I had an older guy share some wisdom such as you gave above back when I was a young man. It would have helped immensely.

Yeah, its not all looks. Some women that that personality. I don’t pretend to be an expert on the psychology of attraction.

“That seems sort of sad that after all that you went home alone.”
Going home alone was the ‘best part’ of the entire trip.

>>>Now we listen to the wailing of ageing women with college degrees who can’t get someone to marry/breed with them.<<<

Those women passed over plenty of thirsty blue pill guys who were boring to them and with average looks. They were holding out for some guy that had more to offer than the guy who were showing interest. They hit the wall, lost their looks and got bitter as time went on. Who the hell wants them now? Enjoy Netflix, cats and dinner for one ladies.

>>>And they expect men to be impressed with their career. It doesn’t work that way.<<<

Lol you remind me of reading women’s dating profiles. It’s like they were writing them to impress other women. I like to travel (me: expensive tastes), I’m strong and independent (me: she’s probably a b1tch) and I’m working on my masters degree (me: who the hell cares).

Ladies like miss marmelstein probably just think I’m some jaded butthurt jerk. But really, I agree with you. Guys don’t as a rule give a flip about a woman’s career.

That’s right; I guess you may say they operated two different types of settlements altogether.

Definitely; I know some that did just that (and now they do just that)...

You forgot to include important information. How pretty? Is she overweight? And does she have kids from some past relation with Chad Thundercock?

Very interesting; thank you! The king personally spent a lot of his own money to develop the colony (sponsoring people).

Good comparison. The Creoles set up colonies that could survive without the motherland, while the French never did. After Napoleon tore through Europe, Spain could never really exert authority over its colonies anymore - and soon lost them.

Oddly enough, Mexico seemed to have the only independence movement that included Indians. The others were more like us (Englishmen here throwing off the yoke of Englishmen over there).

>>>But I paid a lot of attention to men getting screwed over (even 25 years ago), so made a point to never marry an American girl...it paid off.<<<

Been there, done that both ways. My American feminist wife could be extremely mean and cruel. She had more interest in her career than being a good wife or mother. In other words, I totally failed in securing a good wife. When she got bored of her life and blamed me for it, I ended up marrying a woman abroad. She came from a poor family/country. She’s hard working, grateful for the little things and conservative in the way an American woman would have been prior to The Pill being invented.

If a man wants a woman who will be happy being a wife and raising his children, he should at least look abroad and see what the global market of women has to offer. Hint, prettier and more willing to accept gender old fashioned gender roles.

I dunno. A very good friend of mine (in the Church Choir!) who is a nearing-retiremen=age Student Health Center nurse at the local State University, says the college women not only give it away, but don't know there's any other way to relate.

They they get to feel burned, sad, disappointed? "Is this all there is? Because if this is all there is...."

Then they get lesbianized. Y'know?

>>>Yet there were times as the Bible has recorded that women did assume leadership. For example Deborah. There was also Esther. Also a number of early Christian communities were lead by women.<<<

LOL by that logic there should be women preachers.

You point out the exception to rule. As a rule men are taller than women. You can’t argue that isn’t so by saying you know women who are taller than some men. Well you could, but then you’d be arguing like some emotional woman. And Deborah was a reluctant leader as the men around her wouldn’t lead.

Are there any decent college men who can show them there is another way to relate, or are they all in the same boat?

For non-Cathlolic women who actually experienced life before The Pill, the entire rituals of dating and marriage were markedly different “before” and “after.” You are fortunate to have been shielded by your Catholic faith from the sudden dive off a cliff, assuming you sought out Catholic men to date. The women just prior to your era also had the Vietnam War taking the manly men away just as they finished high school and/or college, which also heightened the pressures on dating and mate selection.

Beyond that, it would have been rare for parents of that era to see any new phenomenon as a socially- or morality-changing event in need of explanation to their children. People just didn’t think of themselves as a mass market for social change the way the evil Democrat and Communist Parties and the advertising business did. Now everyone more or less knows they are part of a mass market, but most people are still addicted to the brainwashing via entertainment and media.

Any man that would have disdain for a working class woman is a Beta Bitch. Of course I’d be picky as hell about looks, body weight, prior record, the types of kids she might have... (Prefer none, but for a doozy would break that rule)

I don’t need a woman for her money. In fact, I don’t need a partner at all. However if one emerges it will be rather obvious and I’d go for it.

My husband and I have been happily married for nearly 30 years, and neither of us has ever made a threat, employed domineering or abusive language, tried a commanding or dominating style, used force or raised a hand in anger toward the other. Never.

Sorry to hear you've had it so bad.
