Maybe they’d like to talk about the Bataan death march?

For those that don’t know what this is, surrendered Filipinos and Americans were rounded up by the Japanese and forced to march some 65 miles from Mariveles, on the southern end of the Bataan Peninsula, to San Fernando.

The men were divided into groups of approximately 100, and what became known as the Bataan Death March typically took each group around five days to complete. The exact figures are unknown, but it is believed that thousands of troops died because of the brutality of their captors, who starved and beat the marchers, and bayoneted those too weak to walk.

Survivors were taken by rail from San Fernando to prisoner-of-war camps, where thousands more died from disease, mistreatment and starvation.

The bombs were warned about and were a one strike entity. The butchering of Filipino and American troops for torture for months is different.

They should have thought of the consequences before attacking Pearl Harbor. They awoke a sleeping giant, one filled with a great resolve.

The Atomic bombs were a blessing to the American soldiers and to the Japanese civilians who would have perished had a conventional invasion of Japan taken place.

That said, the Japanese richly deserved the nukes as well as the firebombings - for the evil done by their roving gang of sadists, the ISIS of the 1940s, known as the Japanese Imperial Army. The garbage that was the Japanese culture of the time had to be stomped into oblivion, for the good of the world, and secondarily for the good of the Japanese.

Those bombs saved my father's life.

Mine too. And as a result, mine! My dad was infantry in WW2, in Europe, but the plan was to invade Japan, and it was what would have been necessary had the war carried on.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that while the damage to Nagasaki and Hiroshima was devastating to those two cities, an American invasion of Japan would have created an amount of damage far greater, spread over a much larger area. And, it would have resulted in more lives lost, both US and Japanese. At the time, I suspect that US lives were of greater importance. But it was a time of war. I war, you want to live while your enemy dies.

Fourth - I guess it would have been better to continue the conventional bombing of the entire nation of Japan - firebombing it from one city to the next like was done in Tokyo (and in several Germain cities in Europe)?

Nagasaki and Hiroshima prevented dozens of Dresdens.

Bataan and Manila also come to mind. Although it wouldn’t to a Japanese since actual history between 1937 and 1945 isn’t taught there. I had a Japanese friend of mine look at me in puzzled amazement when he asked about the Nazis and I replied that he ought to know even more than me since his country was allied with them. He simply did not know that.

On a lesser scale but still murder:

Wake Isl. “A few miles away from the memorials that commemorate the war dead on Wake, the “POW Rock” stands on the lagoon shore of Wilkes, mute testimony to the ninety-eight Americans massacred in 1943.”

Sadly, 99% of Japanese have never heard of unit 731, and the fe what HAVE heard of it, the government here still denies it ever happened :/

About 10, or so, years ago, there was a doctor that was involved in 731 that came on camera (crying from guild) and asked for forgiveness for what had happened. Immediately after that, the government here said he was crazy and they have no idea what he was talking about. :/

Koizumi was the first PM (that I know of) that acknowledged and apologized to China. Haven’t seen that happen since him though :p
