Talking to 11 NYC women (and one man) on Women’s Day about striking, Trump, and why capitalism sucks
Fusion ^ | March 9, 2017 | Katie McDonough and Molly Osberg

On March 8, American women were called upon to withhold their paid and unpaid labor in honor of International Women’s Day. In New York, thousands rallied in multiple locations to protest myriad injustices, from the basic tenants of capitalism to the anti-immigrant policies of Donald Trump. Throughout the day, we asked those women—and one man who was inexplicably around—what they were striking for. Full names, ages, and locations are listed as provided.

Mariana Poyares, 30, New York

Why strike?

We all have solid, structural reasons to be striking today. The main idea is to start building a feminism for the 99%. I am also striking against femicide. As a Brazilian, Brazil has the higest rate of femicide. It is the country that kills the most trans and non-binary people. So this is why I decided to strike.

Ariel Starling, 25, Texas

How do you see students acting in solidarity beyond today?

I think the university works well as a community base. Students are in an interesting position. Obviously we have our own issues—crippling debt, there’s the exploitation of graduate students whose labor really allows the university to function. But at the same time it’s a position of privilege....

I thought I knew what femicide was until she started talking about trans and non-binary people. Then it got murky very fast.

I can’t believe I read the whole article. Now my brain hurts. My takeaway is that these are a bunch of lesbian, trans, gender-confused half-wits who have a bag of “buzz words”, and they try to use them up all at one time.

And yet...thanks to capitalism, your lazy asses can screw off wandering around with signs. GTFO of my country and go to North Korea where you’ll be in bliss in your totalitarian paradise.

Yet you are protesting in the New York which has absolutely nothing to do with Brazil.

Isaiah 60:2

2. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.

Wow... I am so amazed at the levels of clouded darkness, ignorance and foolishness to which so many people have fallen.

The vast (vast) majority of these people are boutique protesters. That is, they only protest when it is a) fashionable or hip and b) when there is zero risk to their person.

Which is why many will never protest against anything Islamic—because of the threat of violence.

I'm sure your antics in New York will have a lasting impact on practices in Brazil. Really, I am.

My beloved and I were in line at a Subway shop, (manned by females with noticeable nails), when I remembered it was ‘womyn day’.

I told her about it, and her response was, alphabetically ... “ICGARA, women in their 30’s today just don’t think. my daughters “name” and “name” are prime examples.”

Sheesh, not one of them really works for a real living.

They are all squishy, soft science, feely good kinds of SJW’s.

And then there’s the lawyers, looking to make some bucks off any popular movement.
