CHICAGO -- Minister Louis Farrakhan, head of the Nation of Islam, spoke from a podium draped in the red, black and green of the Pan-African flag, a symbol of black pride.
It was the week after Donald Trump won the presidency. The result had delighted a new generation of white supremacists, and Farrakhan was analyzing the political landscape.
In a speech before the State of the Black World Conference in New Jersey, he warned, "The white man is going to push. He's putting in place the very thing that will limit the freedom of others." Then he pointed to the crowd, smiled and said, "That's what you needed," as motivation to finally separate from whites....

Indeed. It's why I've never taken the term, 'African-American' seriously.
My last African ancestors probably arrived in this country sometime in the early 1800s, but nobody really knows. The familial and cultural bonds to that continent were severed so long ago, even my great grandparents felt no connection to it.
My people have been Americans far too long for me to pay any mind to this nonsense.

My nephews and nieces dont speak a word of Italian. Maybe some curses.
None have been to Italy.

My grandparents (both sides) left the deep south when my parents were young kids. Growing up, my generation had no reality on that part of the country. We don’t even have the accent.
