The 1st Lousiana Native Guard was an all black regiment of the Confederate Army. Unlike the Union’s 54th Massachusetts which had white officers, the Confederate units had black officers.
(a side note, there were 2 1st Louisiana Native Guards, one Union and one Rebel.)

The Colonel, Lt.Colonel and the Majors were white, they appointed by the Governor. The company grade officers of the regiment were black. The 1st Louisiana Native Guards was disbanded in Feb 1862 after the Louisiana legislature in Jan 1862,past a law limiting militia service to white males. Once the Federal forces captured New Orleans about 10% of the 1st LA Native Guards enlisted in the Union Army.

The regiment was never accepted for service in the Confederate army. It was a unit of the Louisiana militia until disbanded in early 1862
