The fact that the Confederate Army was integrated was never controversial or even thought about as significant, it just was. But here on Free Republic you’d think you were a historical heretic to even imply such a thing.

I have always noted that publicly professed attitudes in the North, Boston is my experience, are much more favorable to Negroes than in the South but personal relations in the South tend to be much less acrimonious. Southern white men who even use the old sterotype language are more apt to have personal Negro friends than Northerners do. That excepts the hard inner cores of the cities but the cities in the Southland are long term Democrat strongholds as they are in the North.
