“The flags of the Confederate States of America were very important and a matter of great pride to those citizens living in the Confederacy. They are also a matter of great pride for their descendants as part of their heritage and history.”

God, are back to discussing the rightness and wrongness of flying the Confederate flag?! Not wanting to revisit this again, almost week after week, let me ask a very serious and earnest question: do you not see that flying the Confederate flag is seen by most Americans as a problem and not likely to endear support or respect for your candidate? Argue the point but flying the flag will cause Cruz, for example, to be grouped with the likes of David Duke. How will that help him win the hearts and minds of Americans who might otherwise agree with him?

What “right” was defended, if it was not the “right” to own other human beings? Like abortionists who want to argue for “the right to choose,” the “states rights” argument very conveniently leaves out the choice being made.

Say again.

Call it whatever you want. It was celebrated in Pennsylvania years before it was celebrated in Mississippi.

Can't be said often enough: What "right" do you think is the "right" that was being defended? An abstract principle of "rights?"

Please learn some history.

You have primary sources available to you. In the Southern newspapers of the day, and in the secessionist speeches you will find all the material you need to discover that a specific "right" was being defended by the South. And it is a "right" which no state had, has, or ever will, legitimately possess.

My great grandfather fought for the confederacy and he and his family are buried in unmarked graves in a Longview Texas cemetery. I wonder how I could go about getting one of those markers for him.

IIRC, something like 6% of Americans owned slaves. I didn't own any slaves.

Ergo, I don't owe any frikken reparations.

If reparations are to be paid...levy them against that 6%, and leave the rest of us alone.

Says, you, you arrogant idiot. We do know history. You know your opinion as history. That’s arrogance and ignorance.

Secondly, a number of Southern states had asked the federal government to remove its forts from their property under threat of violent takeover.

Isn't that, like, an act of war?

Well, I wrote a thesis and then erased it because it would bore everyone to death.
We had slavery in this nation. That causes emotions that carry on to this day. Many Americans of African descent proclaim a very verbal and physical anger at having ancestors who were slaves. I’m just pointing out that most Americans, of all colors, have ancestors who were slaves or were essentially slaves, and from the same time as slavery was practiced in this country.
I think that Americans of African descent would be better off if they would realize this.

Their being there were acts of aggression against the states. They were there by the grace of the sovereign states, and when that grace was no longer granted, the feds had to make a decision: would their right to remain, even where not wanted, overrule the right of the states to protect their domains?

In choosing to place the rights of the federal government over the rights of the states, the “Union” became less a voluntary republic than a centralized tyranny. The conflict was as old as the country itself.

I have rigged 7 flag holders on my entry gate (country style gate) and fly a variation of the Bonnie Blue, Sometimes called the Burnett flag (a Texas hero). The Bonnie Blue has a white star and the Burnett flag has a gold star.

This way I don’t have to worry so much about ignorant vandals and can still show respect to the Confederacy...

I also have added a recycled Ted Cruz sign from his Senate campaign to the display, just blacked out For Senator. Probably the first Ted Cruz sign up in Bell County.
