I don’t see that he’s saying he’ll do whatever, and then consult scripture later. He said, he’ll do whatever he is able, and then as we are told (bid) by the scriptures, to “wait upon the Lord...”

Again, I didn’t ask you, I asked Jeff to clarify because only he knows what he was saying. It sounded like he will act, do what he can, and then consult scripture, which is totally backward from what the bible teaches, and what too many people rely on. It’s up there with the idea of “God helps those who help themselves” which is no where in scripture and antithetical to it. We’re supposed to wait upon the Lord and then act. Not vice-a-versa. If more Christians waited upon the Lord before taking things in their own hands, I think we’d have a different world.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow. For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: 'If a man will not work, he shall not eat.'
Proverbs is replete with such kinds of instruction.
