WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats, who won majorities in the U.S. Congress in last week's elections, said on Sunday they will push for a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq to begin in four to six months.
"The first order of business is to change the direction of Iraq policy," said Sen. Carl Levin (news, bio, voting record), a Michigan Democrat who is expected to be chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee in the new Congress.
Levin, on ABC's "This Week," said he hoped some Republicans would emerge to join Democrats and press the administration of President George W. Bush to tell the Iraqi government that U.S. presence was "not open-ended."
Bush has insisted that U.S. troops would not leave Iraq until the Iraqis were able to take over security for their country.
"We need to begin a phased redeployment of forces from Iraq in four to six months," Levin said.
Speaking on the same program, Sen. Joseph Biden (news, bio, voting record), a Delaware Democrat who is expected to head the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he supported Levin's proposal for a withdrawal.
They talk big. Let's see if they actually have the will and the votes to do it.

Not gonna happen. Lieberman votes no. So do one or two other Dems. Chaffee is gone. Probably only one Rep. will vote yes. Bush wins.
That should spark a nice fight within the democratic party.
I tell you it's not possible to trust any of your neighbors, friends, or even relatives who is a Democrat.
Well, the troops will be home for next Christmas.

Congress never officially declared it a war because they didn't want to give over control to the President
They will cut off the funding
They have absolutely no vote on moving the military around or foreign policy.

Yeah but Iraq's leaders have to understand that Uncle Sam is not going to stay around and that they have to get their act together. The American people will not put up with their sons and daughters being killed so they can go out and settle scores with one another. This is not just a democrat position but one taken by conservatives as well.
Unfortunately many good people will be swept up in it

They haven't inked it yet. I think the 'Rats are about to find out the hard way that there's a big difference between whining from the minority and governing as a majority. And considering the 'Rats are operating within a party that's both morally and intellectually bankrupt, they're not equipped to fight let alone win.
I say let them have at it. Then sit back and enjoy watching the circular firing squad they form.
Fortunately for us the terrorists couldn't have picked a worse ally.
