Civil Rights [GITMO] Lawyer Yagman Charged With Tax Evasion

June 23 (UPI) -- A Los Angeles civil rights lawyer who has represented a detainee at Guantanamo Bay and plaintiffs in police-abuse cases was indicted by federal prosecutors on charges of tax evasion and bankruptcy fraud.

Stephen Yagman and his firm, Yagman & Yagman, failed to pay federal and state taxes and lied in a 1999 bankruptcy declaration to hide assets from the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles said in the 19-count indictment.

With the money on which he didn't pay taxes, Yagman and his girlfriend financed a lifestyle ``that included high-priced vacations, gourmet restaurants, and designer clothing,'' prosecutors said.

Yagman, who was born in Brooklyn in 1944, has represented a detainee in Guantanamo Bay who challenged his status as an enemy combatant. Yagman and other civil rights lawyers have sought to represent detainees who were captured during the U.S. military operation in Afghanistan following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. He has argued before the 9th U.S. Court of Appeals against the indefinite confinement of the prisoners in Guantanamo without access to the U.S. courts.

Yagman surrendered to authorities this morning and is scheduled to be arraigned later today, said Thom Mrozek, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office. Yagman's lawyer, Barry Tarlow, didn't immediately return a call to his office.

The case is U.S. v. Stephen G. Yagman, U.S. District Court, Central District of California (Los Angeles), CR06-227.

Are we surprised?

An old man was on his death bed. He wanted badly to take some of his money with him. He called his priest, his doctor and his lawyer to his bedside. "Here's $30,000 cash to be held by each of you. I trust you to put this in my coffin when I die so I can take all my money with me."

At the funeral, each man put an envelope in the coffin. Riding away in a limousine, the priest suddenly broke into tears and confessed, "I had only put $20,000 into the envelope because I needed $10,000 for a new baptistery."

"Well, since we're confiding in each other," said the doctor, "I only put $10,000 in the envelope because we needed a new machine at the hospital which cost $20,000."

The lawyer was aghast. "I'm ashamed of both of you," he exclaimed. "I want it known that when I put my envelope in that coffin, it held my personal check for the full $30,000."

Hmmm, Should I mention that he wrote that check off as a business expense?

This guy's name makes me retch. Nice to see it in the same sentence as "charged."
