A security flub that allowed a U-Haul truck to sit in front of the Douglas County Courthouse for four days had a positive result, said Sheriff Tim Dunning.
"Nothing bad happened, and it put us back on our toes."
His example: Deputies stopped and questioned a Pakistani man taking notes on the courthouse on May 24. The man also had been seen at the Woodmen Tower.
It turned out that the man is "an aficionado of building structures," Dunning said.
The man was released, but not until the FBI, Omaha police, the Sheriff's Office and Immigration and Nationalization Service checked his background.
Dunning said the man was from a Muslim section of Pakistan and now resides in Quebec, where several of the Sept. 11 bombers lived.
Earlier, the man had been in the Woodmen Tower asking questions about the building's size, said Dunning and a Woodmen Tower official.
A day or so before, the man had been in Pennsylvania doing similar things. The FBI there also detained him, Dunning said.

However, it was revealed during the McVeigh investigation that the Omaha federal courthouse was one of finalists for bombing before Oklahoma was selected.
